Despite months of preparations, presidential candidates are still scrambling to garner votes in New Hampshire ahead of the primary election to be held Jan. 10. There are two debates remaining to with which to woo voters just after there were several endorsements of candidates.
Here's a rundown of major endorsements from prominent New England institutions and people.
Former Governor John Sununu
Former New Hampshire governor John Sununu endorsed Mitt Romney back in late October 2011. The Boston Globe reported Sununu's choice came down to three assets in Romney's campaign. Cutting spending, leaving Massachusetts out of a cap-and-trade initiative and strengthening the military.
"If we want to maintain our role as trying to stabilize the world, we have to have our strength. No other candidate has really talked about that," Sununu told the news outlet.
Sen. Kelly Ayotte
New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte endorsed Romney in mid-November. The Boston Globe also reported she was at a campaign stop in Nashua when she officially endorsed the candidate.
"I will be working as hard as I can to help him secure the Republican nomination and, most importantly, ensure that Barack Obama is a one-term president," Ayotte said of Romney, according to the Globe.
Manchester Union-Leader
One of the largest newspapers in New Hampshire endorsed Newt Gingrich. The Manchester Union-Leader sent members of its editorial board out into the public in late November to tout its choice.
"We need a candidate that is bold in his leadership, that has a vision for where he wants to take us as a country and knows how to get there," the paper's editorial page editor said of Gingrich.
Concord Monitor
In late December, the Concord Monitor endorsed Jon Huntsman. The former governor of Utah has been far behind in many polls and the endorsement might have been a boost to his campaign in New Hampshire.
"Huntsman, a consistent but never doctrinaire conservative, would present the greatest challenge to Obama. If elected, he would provide mature, informed and steady leadership," the Monitor stated of the long-shot candidate.
Salmon Press
The Salmon Press went so far as to use its three smaller newspapers to endorse Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. The three news outlets announced their choice just after the Iowa caucus results Jan. 5.
"Powerful leaders like Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan change the political landscape. This is what Ron Paul would do for our country and why we support him," Salmon Press wrote, according to the Daily Caller.
Boston Globe
In a surprise move, Huntsman also picked up a key endorsement from the Boston Globe. Citing his experience in international affairs and his recent post as ambassador to China, the vaunted newspaper shunned the former governor of its own state.
"Huntsman's credentials match those of anyone in the field. He would be the best candidate to seize this moment in GOP history, and the best-prepared to be president," the Globe's editorial stated.
The New Hampshire primary is still anyone's race if these varied endorsements are any indication.
