SafeSync for Business

Individuals and businesses alike face the problem of how to access files without physical access to the device that houses the data. A range of cloud-based services have stood up to solve this problem, some with better results than others. Trend Micro's SafeSync for Business (there's also a "for Home" edition) is one such problem-solver. It's well suited for businesses that intend to pay for at least 20GB of storage no matter what solution they use, although it doesn't offer any particularly compelling features or a sexy interface design, while its competition does.

The biggest name in the synchronization game is Dropbox (4 stars) (an Editors' Choice), an excellent and widely used service among individuals in particular. Dropbox comes to my mind when I think of the consumerization of IT. Many people love Dropbox for personal use, and, they're willing to use their personal account at the office to get work done in a pinch, either covertly or overtly. TrendMicro's SafeSync for Business is, as its name suggested, targeted squarely at the business market proper, rather than rogue employees. However, now that Dropbox has dropped more competition into the SMB ring with Dropbox for Teams (a business-end solution that leverages the system so many already know and love), TrendMicro will have to compete head to head with Dropbox for business customers, too.

Another one of our favorite file-syncing services, and also an Editors' Choice but with less name-brand recognition, is SugarSync (4.5 stars), which can't be beat for supporting every major and minor platform, from Symbian to Windows Mobile to Linux. SugarSync also wins consumers over by offering 5GB free (Dropbox gives away 2GB). But doubling SugarSync's free space with a whopping 10GB for any user is CX (4 stars), which doesn't support as many system as SugarSync but is nearly as good in every other way and sports an attractive web component.

Among all these excellent options, it's tough to find unique characteristics of SafeSync that truly set it apart. It checks all the basic boxes: syncing across devices, general sharing features, a dedicated folder for drag-and-drop file upload. SafeSync's Web interface looks drab compared to those of Dropbox, CX, and SugarSync. TrendMicro touts invisible advantages, though, like the fact that it owns its data center and thus can guarantee 99.9 percent service availability. Another benefit: SafeSync provides pretty tight controls over network processes, such as upload and download speeds.

Space, Prices, and Supported Systems
File-syncing companies have been slashing prices recently with all the fierce competition in the market, and TrendMicro is competitive in this area. SafeSync's one-year plans look affordable for a small business: 20GB for $23.95; 50GB for $53.95; and a whopping 100GB for $89.95. But a two-year contract offers even more savings: 20GB for $35.95; 50GB for $77.95; and 100GB for $119.95. Mind you, these are one-time payments, not recurring monthly or annual charges. For 100GB, Dropbox and CX both charge $19.99 per month, or $239.88 for the year. SugarSync's going rate for the same package is a one-time fee of $149.99. Syncplicity, another service we've tested, is the most expensive, doesn't even advertise a 100GB plan, but does have a one-year 50GB option for $15 per month.

Support for a variety of operating systems couldn't be more pertinent to a discussion of file syncing, as the whole point of the service is to give you access to your files anywhere. SafeSync hits the big four: Windows, Mac, iOS (3.0 and later), and Android (2.1 and later). It does not support BlackBerry or Windows Mobile, though. If you or your business rely on those platforms, or even Symbian (unlikely) or Linux (more likely), stick with SugarSync, which has apps for them all.

When we first heard about Samsung's 5.3-inch Galaxy Note, we didn't really know what to do with it. Is it a phone? Is it a tablet? Oh, look! A stylus! It was weird. But apparently people like weird, as Samsung is now reporting that it's shipped over 1 million Galaxy Note phablets globally. The device launched back in September, and devices shipped is normally a higher number than the devices actually out in the real world, but it's still a solid number nonetheless.

I could see Weiss playing in at least one of the upcoming weekend games.

Amazon plans to set up local logistics backend in India

Seattle (Washington)-headquartered Online retailer Amazon has prepared the process for creating a local logistics backend in India, marking its precursor to launch full-fledged operations to trade products in the country.

Amazon Asia-Pacific Resources, a Singapore-based arm of Amazon, is planning to setup a wholly owned subsidiary in Delhi-NCR to enable courier services for delivery of goods within the India.

The company is planning an initial investment of about $3m for hiring around 300 people for the independent Indian venture following the proposal filed with the Indian authorities for approval.

techcircle.in has reported that the plan to set up a courier firm follows the company's plan to launch its marketplace under the domain name amazon.in via a separate, wholly owned arm for its e-commerce activities.

The company also operates various country specific e-commerce sites in Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and the UK.

The company already operates a development centre for refining and redefining how Amazon creates and manages product information for all its retail sites in India.

Heavy D death caused by pulmonary embolism (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The sudden death in November of rapper Heavy D was due to a pulmonary embolism caused by deep leg vein thrombosis, the Los Angeles Coroner's office said on Tuesday.

Heavy D, 44, who rose to fame in the 1990s with hit singles such as "Now That We Found Love," was found struggling to breath outside his Beverly Hills apartment on November 8 and died later at a nearby hospital.

The coroner's office said in report that no drugs or alcohol were involved, but said that heart disease was a contributing factor in his death.

A pulmonary embolism is a blockage of an artery in the lung, often caused by a blood clot that travels to another part of the body. The condition is sometimes associated with long distance air travel.

Heavy D, whose real name is Dwight Arrington Myers, was born in Jamaica and moved to Mt. Vernon, New York as a child. His group Heavy D & The Boyz, released their first album in 1987 and their break-out album "Big Tyme" was released in 1989.

The rapper also acted in film and television, taking on small roles in "Boston Public", "Step-Up" and "Big Trouble."

Eastern Libya poll indicates political Islam will closely follow democracy

If Libya manages to forge a political system where majority views are taken into account it's clear that political Islam is set to play a major political role.

A new poll of eastern Libyan public opinion released last week indicates that political Islam is set to play a major role in the country's future if institutions emerge that take into accout the will of the general public.

The poll sponsored by the International Republican Institute (a US-government funded non-profit) found a high degree of optimism about the future, concerns about the security situation in the country, and?conservative (and somewhat contradictory)?attitudes when it comes to?faith and politics.

In Eastern Libya, 83 percent said freedom of the press was "important," and 71 percent said it was important to have laws giving equal rights to "religious and tribal groups," which would seem to indicate concern for protecting minority rights. But 94 percent agreed with the proposition that "people should be prohibited from offending" religions and 85 percent agreed that "religion should be part of government" (68 percent of those "strongly agreed.") Asked about whether a "secular" state was a good idea, 69 percent of Libyans dissaproved against 14 percent that approved.

None of this means that a Saudi Arabian style regime is in the offing. Many Arab's take the word "secular" to mean something like "Godless," so the notion of secularism is offensive. But there's a long continuum from there to religious rule.?But over time, it would be natural for groups like the Libyan version of the Muslim Brotherhood, which has emerged as the dominant power in Egypt's ongoing parliamentary elections, to develop a major voice in politics (Qaddafi suppressed?Islamist political activism as ruthlessly as he did all other challenges to his rule). ?

The poll was carried?out in mid-October,?as Muammar Qaddafi's hometown and last bastion, Sirte, was falling to the rebellion, which?probably?pushed results in a positive direction. Not only did optimism surge at the time of Qaddafi's death, which effectively ended the civil war, but eastern Libya was less touched by the ravages of war than Western towns like Tripoli, Sirte, and Misrata.

But the numbers are still striking. In Eastern Libya, 84?percent of respondents said they were positive about the?future and that the National Transitional Council (NTC), the unelected group that's promised to guide Libya to democracy, were doing a good job. Meeting these high expectations may be a challenge though.??

Asked what government priorities should be, 97 percent said it was "very important" for the? government to provide food and housing for?the poor and 72 percent said it was "very important" for the government to "play a central role in the economy and business sector."?The context for?that second answer is that Libya's oil wealth has made the government the country's largest employer, by far. Though they may have hated Qaddafi, Libyans agreed with him that it's the state's responsibilty to deliver jobs and economic growth,. You can expect whatever government emerges to play a dominate role in the economy, at least in the medium term.

Va. police find 2-year-old boy in stolen SUV

RICHMOND?? A massive Christmas Eve search for a 2-year-old boy who was in the backseat of an SUV that was stolen following a double-slaying in Richmond ended around midnight with the boy being found safe, police said.

Richmond police said in a Tweet late Saturday: "2-year-old Kaiden Burnside is OK. Found alone inside SUV off Jennie Scher Road. Thanks to everyone for assistance."

City police spokeswoman Karla Peters told the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/svXlqT ) the child was found sleeping alone in the parked vehicle.

"He's being checked out by EMS and will soon be reunited with his mother," Peters said.

Authorities late Saturday identified the suspect as 27-year-old Jamal Louis Clemons of Richmond, Va. They say Clemons is wanted for abduction, robbery, robbery with a firearm and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony by a convicted felon.

Richmond city police said in a press release that shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to a report of two persons down and found an adult man and an adult woman inside a Church Hill residence. Both had been fatally shot.

Witnesses reported that a man fled the scene inside a 2012 white GMC Terrain SUV that was left with the motor running and the boy strapped in the back seat, the news release said.

The Virginia State Police issued an Amber Alert at 9:39 p.m. EST Saturday for the boy, identified as Kaiden Gage Burnside. They described him as having short blond hair and blue eyes, and wearing a red plaid shirt, a cream-colored vest with a red truck carrying a Christmas tree, dark green corduroy slacks and white light-up sneakers.

"The child is believed to be in extreme danger," the alert said.

City police described the suspect ? later identified as Clemons ? as a black man in his mid- to late 20s, 5-foot-8 and 150 to 160 pounds, with black hair and wearing dark jeans and a black zip-up sweat shirt with a hood. He is believed to be armed with a revolver.

"We don't believe that he knew there was a child in the back seat," Richmond police Maj. Steve Drew told the newspaper.

Police said they didn't believe the shooting was random but have not released additional details about the victims or their potential relationship to the suspect.

Officers continued to search early Sunday for the suspect.

Richmond police did not return repeated calls from The Associated Press on Saturday evening.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Armed clashes erupted in Syria Sunday, killing at least 14 civilians and six government troops in central and northern Syria, activists said, the latest sign that the nation's uprising may be deteriorating into civil war.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said an army officer was among the six soldiers killed in the town of Qusair in Homs province, near the border with Lebanon.

"Three armored vehicles were destroyed, and those inside were killed and wounded," according to the group, which relies on a network of activists inside the country. It said the clashes also resulted in the "partial destruction of some homes."

Heavy gunbattles were also reported Sunday in several villages in the restive Jabal al-Zawiya region in the northern Idlib province near the Turkish border, where many defectors are believed to be operating.

The Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees activist network said at least 14 civilians were killed in clashes and shootings by security forces toward civilian areas in the Homs region, as well as the Jabal al-Zawiya area and the town of Maaret al-Numan in the north.

The reports could not be confirmed independently, because Syria has banned most foreign correspondents and limited movement around the country.

Syria has seen a sharp escalation in armed clashes recently, raising concerns the country of 22 million is slipping toward civil war nine months into the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The Syrian revolt began in mid-March as protesters emboldened by uprisings across the Arab world took to the streets to demand an end to the Assad family's more than 40-year rule. The regime responded with a bloody crackdown that the U.N. says has killed at least 5,000 people.

The Arab League has given Syria until Wednesday to allow observers into the country, or else it will likely turn to the U.N. Security Council for action to try to end the deadly violence against regime opponents, Qatar's prime minister said Saturday.

Speaking after an Arab ministerial committee meeting in Doha, Sheik Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabr Al Thani said Arab foreign ministers will hold a "decisive and important" meeting in Cairo on Wednesday to decide on the next step.

He said there is near unanimity on taking the Arab League's plan to the Security Council in hopes the world body can bring more pressure to bear on Damascus to accept it. Syria has demanded changes to the proposal, which calls for an end to the government crackdown.

The United Nations has been waiting for word from the Arab League before moving ahead with a resolution on Syria. A clear nod from Damascus' Arab neighbors could ease Russian and Chinese opposition to sanctions. Both nations have veto power at the Security Council.

The Arab League plan calls for Syria to halt its crackdown, hold talks with the opposition and allow in Arab observers to ensure compliance with the deal. It does not call for foreign military intervention, as in Libya.

The 22-member League has also suspended Syria's membership and imposed sanctions, but it has been divided over whether to seek the help of the wider international community beyond the Arab world.

While the Android tablets continue to roll in, Apple can still lay claim to the lion's share of the tablet market according to IDC's latest report. Its research suggests that the iPad holds onto 61.5 percent of the worldwide market share, down from 63.3 percent last quarter. Android devices in total also saw a slight contraction, down from 33.2 percent to 32.4 percent. This is partly explained by the HP TouchPad's final hurrah, which rocketed the ill-fated webOS tablet up to third place with a 5 percent of share of tablet sales and an estimated 903,354 devices sold. Samsung maintained its Honeycomb tablet crown, nabbing 5.6 percent of all tablet sales. The Korean manufacturer was closely tailed by Barnes and Noble's Nook Color with 4.5 percent and Asus, arriving at fifth place with a four percent share. Tablets in total sold less than the analysts had predicted, although E-readers outperformed estimates, with 6.5 million E-readers sold in the third quarter, up 165.9 percent from last year. Olympus revises Q1 net loss to 1.4 bln yen from 2.2 bln yen (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Olympus Corp said on Wednesday that it has withdrawn its annual earnings forecasts and that there will be no H1 dividend.

The scandal-struck medical equipment and camera maker also said in its half-year earnings report that it expects to be able to continue to secure funding from financial institutions.

The company made a Wednesday deadline to submit its results for the six months to September, avoiding an automatic delisting of its shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It also restated its accounts for the past five years.

New charge dropped against man Pawlenty pardoned (AP)

MANKATO, Minn. ? A Minnesota prosecutor says he intends to dismiss a new sexual assault charge filed against a man who had received a pardon in a previous case from a panel that included then-Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a former GOP presidential candidate.

Assistant Blue Earth County Attorney Mike Hanson tells the Mankato Free Press ( http://bit.ly/uk3sqj) that the felony sexual assault charge filed against Jeremy Giefer in November 2010 was being dropped because there was no longer enough evidence to go to trial. He says the decision was made after a recent conversation with the key witness.

Pawlenty and two other officials voted in 2008 to grant Giefer's petition for a pardon on his 1994 conviction for having sex with a 14-year-old girl, whom he later married.

Pawlenty ended his presidential campaign in August.

Ford Motor Company just officially started production on its new Ford Focus Electric 2012 model in its Wayne, Michigan assembly plant. The Ford Focus Electric is the first EV of its kind to receive a 100 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) fuel efficiency rating, and it charges two times faster than the Nissan Leaf ? the only other electric vehicle in its class. One third of Ford?s 2012 vehicle lineup consists of cars that get 40 mpg or better fuel ratings. The company has completely revamped its Wayne factory to create a flexible assembly line, and it has installed one of the largest solar power generation systems in the state.
