Gingrich, Perry and Texas First Lady in Rock Hill this week

--?

Republican presidential hopefuls Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will campaign in Rock Hill this week.

Perry will host a breakfast meet-and-greet at Kinch?s Kitchen, 123 Elk Ave., Rock Hill, Tuesday at 8.30 a.m. U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-Indian Land, will also be there, said a source with Perry?s campaign.

Perry?s wife, Texas First Lady Anita Perry, will also make an appearance. She?ll speak at 7 p.m. Monday at the York County Republican Women?s first meeting of the year at Thursdays Too Restaurant, 147 Herlong Ave.

Gingrich will hold a town hall campaign event Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Magnolia Room at 417 Laurel Creek Drive, Rock Hill.

South Carolinians can expect to see the GOP candidates more between now and Jan. 21, said Glenn McCall, chairman of the York County Republican Party.

Their strategy will be to plan intimate campaign stops: coffee shops, diners, and meet-and-greets, he said. Santorum showed in Iowa the strategy worked, ?getting out and meeting the voters.?

With so many undecided voters, the contest is anyone?s to win in South Carolina, he said.

Gingrich?s Rock Hill stop will be his first. He was the state?s December frontrunner, slipping in recent days behind former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, who came in first and second in Iowa. Texas Rep. Ron Paul took third in Iowa and Gingrich finished fourth.

Gov. Perry?s visit, his second to Rock Hill, coincides with New Hampshire?s presidential preference primary Tuesday.

Perry?s initial popularity in South Carolina quickly plummeted in October and has remained low since. The latest state polls show him ahead of only former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, according to Real Clear Politics.

After a fifth-place finish in Iowa last week, Perry returned to Texas to reassess his campaign only to announce less than a day later he would continue his campaign, skipping New Hampshire and heading to South Carolina.

Santorum has made two stops in York County, and Huntsman one. Romney and Paul haven?t visited yet.

South Carolina?s Jan. 21 primary is the next state contest and considered one of the most important. Since 1980, the state?s first-in-the-South primary has predicted the eventual GOP presidential nominee.
