a few of my favorite things: preparing

Well, we've got just over 5 weeks before D-day (due date, that is:). Physically, I'm more than ready for this little guy's arrival. Practically speaking, not so much. A lot has been happening around here to try to get our house and family prepared. Here are just a few of the goings on:

1. "practicing"
Anna really isn't much of a baby doll person, but we pulled out the one she has so we could start "practicing". We made a big deal of getting him dressed in some newborn clothes and she's been working on swaddling him. She's pretty excited about baby Knox and I think she's going to be super helpful when he comes. (That's her shy face below) Owen is the one I'm more concerned about. He is very much a mama's boy and doesn't do well when he's not getting my attention. I think he's in for a rude awakening. Hence, the attempts to prepare him by talking about the baby doll.

2. Baby gear and house prep

I was in Middletown a few weekends ago for a baby shower and brought home most of our baby "gear" that was being stored in my Mother-in-law's basement. I immediately felt so much more prepared once I had a bag of newborn clothes and a bassinet. Not to mention bouncers, a swing, a bathtub, etc.?

I've never had a newborn in a two story house before, so that has posed some interesting logistical questions, particularly since our room is on the first floor. If your house is set up this way, I'd love to hear how you best set up house when bringing home baby. We'll have the bassinet in our room for a while, so that will eliminate running upstairs to the nursery multiple times a night, at least for a while.?

I'd been hunting for a reasonably priced dresser on Craigs List for several weeks that I could use on the first floor as a changing station and "keeper of baby stuff." I was frustrated after missing the sale on several pieces and decided to try Trader's World (flea market) with my mom while we were in town a few weeks ago. We came across this piece and I immediately loved it. Great shape and didn't need repainted or refinished. Woohoo!

3. Doctor's appointments
Since moving 10+ months ago, we haven't really switched over all of our doctors. Man, it's hard work finding all new doctors, checking on insurance, and filling out paperwork! I decided that it would probably be best to get in as many appointments in a) before Knox's arrival (when leaving 2 kids with a sitter is easier than 3) and b) before the end of the year. This week I went to the eye doctor, the dentist, and my regular OB visit. Phew. And next week Anna goes to the doctor for her (very late) 3 year check up so she can get cleared for preschool. Which leads to the next point of baby prep/transition.

4. Preschool and potty training
We decided to enroll Anna into preschool a few mornings a week. I think that it'll be really good for her to have something regular to go to outside the house and without me. It will also give me a little bit more time with just Owen as he adjusts to sharing me with Knox. That's our hope anyway! Anna is really excited about school and it was another good incentive for her to really master potty training. She's been doing great with #1, but has refused to go #2 on the potty. She would just wait until we put her in a diaper before bed or she'd ask for one at naps. Today she went for the 2nd time (without prompting!!) and she was SO proud of herself. Almost as proud as me:) Here she is enjoying the reward we've been promising her for weeks. I love the look of satisfaction.

5.?D-Day plan
The last thing that had been kind of stressing me out was putting a delivery day plan into place. Moving away from all of our family made this more difficult than I thought. When I went into labor with Owen we just dropped Anna with our sister-in-law who stayed at home with our nephews and lived 6 houses away. We finally have a "day plan" and an "evening plan" in place thanks to two wonderful friends and I feel SO much better knowing that we have these people on-call to help us out with Owen and Anna until my mom arrives for relief. Seriously, thank you!!

My emotions teeter back and forth between hopeful anticipation and sheer terror/anxiety as we await the arrival of this sweet boy. I'm really so excited to finally meet him and potentially complete our family. On the other hand, I don't trust my own emotions and how easily overwhelmed I can get and I worry about how it's all going to play out after we bring him home. Pray with me that the Lord will prepare my heart, our home, and our family and that I will have peace and trust that he will provide us with everything we truly need. Thanks for your support, friends!

Sailing Adventures #5 ? Sailing the Pacific ? CJujitsu

Sailing has been a passion since I first learned to sail, more than 40 years ago.? It sounds like a long time but in reality the years have passed quickly.? There are so many oceans and seas yet to explore.? Today, for the first time, I sailed in to the Pacific.? I have been on other boats before but never sailed, on my own, past the channel buoy and out in to the Pacific Ocean.? My heart pounded and I was actually quite nervous despite all my years of sailing knowledge.? I suppose it was due to my lack of experience in this setting.? On the east coast, I can sail without charts and without navigating for that matter, as I have it rote, in my head.? But now I was in unchartered waters and wasn?t sure what to expect.? One thing I did know, the weather was perfect.? Although a Hurricane was churning off the coast of Baja, California, it would not affect my day.? The weather was sunny, the temperature was 72 degrees Farenheit, 22 Celsius and the seas were calm.? Although the wind was supposed to increase to 20 knots, there was only a light 10 knot breeze.? As?I left the Getty of Long beach behind and looked out at the vastness of the Pacific, I was in awe.? Out there in the seemingly endless distance, was Australia, Hawaii, Japan.? At 200 miles per day, it would take me almost two weeks to reach Honolulu, Hawaii.? With only enough food for one day, I decided it wouldn?t be prudent.? But it was certainly fun to think about.? By mid afternoon, the wind was blowing at a steady 18 knots, just over twenty miles per hour.? Drugs are to an addict what wind is to a sailor.? I couldn?t get enough.? I tacked back and forth all day until the last possible moment when I had to take the boat back to the dock.? The day felt as if only? minutes had passed and I realized when I stepped off the boat, I must come back and make that journey to Hawaii a reality.? It?s now officially part of my bucket list and a goal I look forward to accomplishing.

Militants attack Pakistan army post, kill 8 troops

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Taliban militants ambushed a Pakistani army post near the Afghan border before dawn Wednesday, killing eight soldiers, in a reminder of the threat posed by insurgents despite numerous military offensives against them.

The attack occurred in the South Waziristan tribal area, once the main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban, a military official said. The military launched a large offensive against militants there in 2009, but insurgents still operate in the area and periodically stage attacks.

In addition to the eight soldiers killed, six others were wounded in the ambush near Ghatbadr village in the Shakai Valley, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media. The attack started around midnight and lasted for several hours, he said.

The assault followed the start of a new army operation to rout militants from the area, the official said. During the operation over the last two days, soldiers killed 18 militants and destroyed seven of their hideouts. Another 21 militants were wounded, according to the official.

The official initially said nine soldiers were killed but later lowered the toll to eight.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the post. The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, claimed they killed 12 soldiers and beheaded some of them.

The differing accounts could not be independently verified.

The military has conducted offensives against the Pakistani Taliban in six of the seven areas that make up Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region along the Afghan border.

The U.S. said recently that Islamabad plans to launch an operation against the Pakistani Taliban in the last major militant sanctuary in the region, North Waziristan. But Pakistani military officials have downplayed the comments, saying they intend to slowly ratchet up the pressure on militants in North Waziristan rather than launch a sweeping offensive.

Many Pakistani Taliban fighters fled to North Waziristan and other parts of the tribal region following the 2009 army operation in South Waziristan.

The U.S. has criticized Pakistan for refusing to target militants who use North Waziristan as a base to attack coalition forces in Afghanistan, especially the so-called Haqqani network.

Pakistan has said its forces are stretched too thin by operations against the Pakistani Taliban in other parts of the tribal region, but many analysts believe Islamabad is reluctant to cross militants viewed as potential allies in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw.

The top commander of U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, is scheduled to visit Pakistan on Thursday to meet with the country's army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the Pakistani military said.

Ecological monitoring on bird populations in Europe re-evaluated

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Biodiversity and environmental monitoring is of crucial importance to diagnose changes in the environment and natural populations in order to provide conservation practice with relevant data and recommendations. The information from monitoring is required, for example, for the design and evaluation of biodiversity policies, conservation management, land use decisions, and environmental protection.

Birds are headline indicators of biodiversity due to their worldwide distribution and popularity. More than 600 bird monitoring programs are in place in Europe, resulting in huge investment of effort. Nearly 28,000 people have been involved in the 144 monitoring programs analyzed in the Nature Conservation paper, spending almost 80,000 person days per year. The evaluation was performed in SCALES, a large-scale integrated project funded by the 7th Framework Program (FP7) of the European Union.

At a dedicated SCALES symposium at the 3rd European Congress of Conservation Biology (ECCB) in Glasgow on 28th-31st of August 2012, the lead author Dr Dirk Schmeller from the CNRS, France and guest researcher at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research -- UFZ in Leipzig, Germany, commented: "Although popular among conservationists, bird-monitoring practices have never been characterized quantitatively. We undertook a focused questionnaire-based survey to objectively explore the strengths and weaknesses of the massive bird-monitoring effort in Europe. The results indicate a high potential for further improvements to bird monitoring in sampling design, data analysis and involvement of volunteers from the public."

"Variation in space and time can cause a significant deviation in the monitoring results, which may lead to incorrect conservation policy decisions," added Dr Klaus Henle from UFZ and coordinator of SCALES. "Therefore increasing awareness of the spatial or temporal scale at which monitoring has been performed can be of crucial importance!"

To optimize the monitoring practices, the scientists have proposed a range of recommendations. For most monitoring programs, the best data type to be collected is quantitative (count) data, such as number of individuals, which provide an early warning for conservation and policy. Further, monitoring could optimize resource allocation between independent monitoring sites. Importantly, even low variation between sites or years can induce spurious conclusions; hence repetitive sampling of the same sites within a year should be the rule.

In case of limited manpower, Schmeller and colleagues recommend an increase in the number of monitoring samples, even at the expense of the size of each sample. Further, more collaborations between monitoring programs at different scales need to be established, so that the sampled data may be integrated and re-used.

Finally, monitoring coordinators have to make special efforts to attract volunteers. Coordinators need to keep in mind several important points: 1) the specific characters of the local community; 2) having a recruitment strategy for volunteers interested in monitoring; 3) maintaining good communication with the volunteers; 4) having low hierarchies and treat volunteers with respect, and 5) making links to other voluntary organizations to add value to the work. Schmeller adds: "There is no one clear recipe to recruit and keep volunteers, but what is important is to keep in mind that the volunteers sacrifice their spare time for monitoring activities, which are of interest to all society!"

Partisan Politics and Small Business Don't Mix! | Constant Contact ...

You can?t escape it!

This year?s political battles are in the daily headlines. It?s also a popular topic of conversation around the water cooler. Nearly everyone has an opinion about politics.

The wonderful thing about living in this country?the freedom to express our opinions. However, as my mother used to say, ?Susan, there?s a time and a place for everything.?

The workplace is not the place for politics.

Here?s what you can do to keep your workplace politically correct:

Make your business a politics-free zone

Political discussions with co-workers often result in conflict affecting productivity and performance. When it comes to your customers or clients?it could mean lost business.

To minimize potential problems, many small businesses are creating policies to keep partisan politics out of the office.

Here are some things to consider for your small business.

  • ?Discourage conversation. Let your team members know that political discussions should be conducted on their personal time, not at the office. In addition to creating divisiveness, conversations regarding specific political positions could rise to the level of harassment. For example, comments about immigration policy or women?s rights might offend an employee to the degree that it creates a hostile and oppressive work environment subjecting you to potential liability.
  • Limit political signage. It?s a good idea to limit political signage and other political paraphernalia. That?s particularly true if your customers or clients come to your location. They may see the posted material as an endorsement, which could cost you business.
  • ?Don?t ask, don?t tell. Never ask your employees or customers who they support. You don?t want to appear to be coercing anyone to vote a certain way. Furthermore, if you?re asked this question, it?s best to keep quiet. You can decline to answer, change the subject, or excuse yourself from the conversation.

When you?re working, you?re there to do a job, not campaign for a particular candidate or position. It?s unfortunate, but people often judge others based on their political views, which may affect the way they view your business.

There are numerous times I bite my tongue when it comes to politics in a business setting. Politics, like religion, is personal. Be respectful of everyone?s right to participate in the political process, but remember it doesn?t belong in your small business.

Does your business have a ?no politics at work? policy? Tell us about it!

LG's Smart TV alliance grows, promises first cross-platform HDTV apps in September

LG's Smart TV alliance grows, promises first crossplatform HDTV apps in September, SDK 20 on track for yearend

The Smart TV Alliance consisting of LG and TP Vision (Philips) is still hammering away at its dream of platform-independent Smart TV apps, and as IFA 2012 gets under way it has a few new announcements. After promising Japanese manufacturers would join back in June it has welcomed Toshiba to the fold, as well as other supporters like Qaulcomm, Mstar, Onigo and Yume. At IFA 2012, LG is showing off the first apps built to the original SDK 1.0 spec built by Accuweather, Eurosport, online music channel Vilanoise and others. It's not stopping there however, as the SDK 2.0 we'd heard about is still due before 2012 is out, and has been built to take advantage of the new more powerful SoCs that companies like Qualcomm (the S4 family) and Mstar can provide to HDTV manufacturers.

Health Nutrition And Physical fitness ? Seasons Captured

Health, nutrition and health and fitness are the three related areas that establish an individual?s sense of pleasure and well being.

Well being involves the physical, psychological and spiritual levels of the individual. A physically healthful person is one who can conduct out normal daily physical activities and react to emergencies with out undo fatigue or discomfort. The health part of health, nutrition and fitness is actually achieved through a healthy program of good nutrition, balanced physical activity, continuous schooling and mental routines, and social along with spiritual activities. Your different amounts of the food you eat and your activities affect both your current short term and long-term health (how you feel right now and in the future). You might be getting plenty you can eat, but if it is not a suitable balance of selections from all five from the basic food groups you might be adding fat for your body without creating the energy to burn the particular calories and energy to the cells to carry out their own functions. Healthy physical activity allows burn off any excess calories you consume, and also keeps muscles and joints versatile and strong.

Zija

Your efforts of continued education (looking at, attending seminars, as well as attending formal education classes), and spiritual activities (social activities, attending devotional services, relaxation, etc) provides you with feeling of accomplishment and well-being.

An important part of good wellness is being physically fit tweaking proper body weight. Maintaining health requires following a healthy diet, and exercising to build and maintain muscles, and to burn from an excess calories.

Nutrition

The actual nutritional health section of health, nutrition and physical fitness deals with the food we consume to maintain our health and wellbeing and provide energy to remain our daily lives. Nutrition is the process of nurturing or becoming nourished; the total of all the so-called processes that a plant or animal utilizes to take in and course of action food substances to maintain a healthy life.

A normal nutrition life style requires a well-balanced diet of food selected from the several basic food groups, fruit, vegetables, naturally calcium rich dairy products or perhaps calcium enriched products, whole grains, and health proteins (lean meat sea food, peas and beans). Other dietary factors should also be deemed. Most fruits and vegetables are better if they are consumed organic because heating damages some of the healthy nutrients. Steaming and broiling your meals are better than boiling or frying foods. Preparing fruits and veggies and vegetables is preferable to processed or ready foods. The prepared food items generally contain far more salt (sodium) than necessary and other flavour enhancing substances. Some of those additives do not increase any nutritional value on the food and may even always be harmful to your health.

Much more nutritional factors to consider would be the variety of the fruits and vegetables in our diet. Nutritional info shows that dark green greens (romaine lettuce, kale, broccoli, and many others.), and orange greens (carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and summer squash) offers more nutritional value compared to some of the less vibrant vegetables.

Here are much more nutrition facts. Some foods help with burning fat. Green tea leads to fat burning by increasing the body?s metabolism and raising energy level. Foods high in health proteins are more difficult to process so they require much more calories in the digestive system process.

Good nutrition methods may not be sufficient for some people they may require special supplements such as CoEnzimeQ10 or others.

Physical Fitness

Physical fitness portion of fitness, health and nutrition will be the ability to carry out daily activities, enjoy leisure activities and have a healthy disease fighting capability to resist disease and infection. Developing and maintaining great physical fitness requires a harmony of good nutrition and diverse physical exercise.

Nutrition tied to improved sperm DNA quality in older men: Healthy micronutrient intake linked to reduced DNA fragmentation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A new study led by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) found that a healthy intake of micronutrients is strongly associated with improved sperm DNA quality in older men. In younger men, however, a higher intake of micronutrients didn't improve their sperm DNA.

In an analysis of 80 healthy male volunteers between 22 and 80 years of age, the scientists found that men older than 44 who consumed the most vitamin C had 20 percent less sperm DNA damage compared to men older than 44 who consumed the least vitamin C. The same was true for vitamin E, zinc, and folate.

"It appears that consuming more micronutrients such as vitamin C, E, folate and zinc helps turn back the clock for older men. We found that men 44 and older who consumed at least the recommended dietary allowance of certain micronutrients had sperm with a similar amount of DNA damage as the sperm of younger men," says Andy Wyrobek of Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division.

"This means that men who are at increased risk of sperm DNA damage because of advancing age can do something about it. They can make sure they get enough vitamins and micronutrients in their diets or through supplements," adds Wyrobek.

Wyrobek conducted the research with a team of researchers that includes Brenda Eskenazi of the University of California at Berkeley's School of Public Health and scientists from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. They report their findings in the August 27 online issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Their research comes as more men over 35 have children, which raises public health concerns. Previous research conducted in Wyrobek's lab found that the older a man is, the more he's likely to have increased sperm DNA fragmentation, chromosomal rearrangements, and DNA strand damage. Older men are also more likely to have increased frequencies of sperm carrying certain gene mutations, such as those leading to dwarfism. These findings help explain why aging men are less fertile and are predicted to have more chromosomally defective pregnancies and a higher proportion of offspring with genetic defects.

But until now, researchers haven't understood whether diet can protect against the detrimental effects of aging on the sperm genome.

The scientists studied a group of about 80 men between 20 and 80 years old with an average age of 44. They were recruited several years ago as part of the California Age and Genetic Effects on Sperm Study when Wyrobek was at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Each man who participated in the study filled out a 100-item questionnaire that estimated their average daily vitamin intake, both from food and supplements.

In addition, their sperm DNA quality was assessed via a lab analysis in which a voltage gradient pulls broken DNA strands from intact strands within the sperm nucleus.

Each volunteer's intake of a micronutrient was classified as low, moderate, or high based on how they compared to other participants. The median daily intake, both from diet and supplements, was 162 milligrams for vitamin C, 23.7 milligrams for vitamin E, 2,586 micrograms for ?-carotene, 475 grams for folate, and 12.3 milligrams for zinc. Many participants, even those who reported to be healthy, consumed much less than the recommended dietary allowance for many of the micronutrients.

The scientists analyzed the data several ways and came up with the same result each time: A diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients may decrease the risk of producing sperm with DNA damage, especially in older men.

Why this is so isn't a mystery. Antioxidants scavenge reactive molecules that cause oxidative damage to cells. Studies have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants and increased consumption of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables can decrease the amount of oxidative DNA damage.

Based on their results, the scientists believe this same protective mechanism may also be at work in the reproductive tract of older men.

"The different response of the old and young men presents new opportunities for health care, especially for older men planning families," says Wyrobek.

More research is needed, however. Although the scientists found a clear link between higher vitamin intake and improved sperm DNA quality in older men, they don't know whether this link extends to male fertility and the health of offspring.

"Our research points to a need for future studies to determine whether increased antioxidant intake in older fathers will improve fertility, reduce risks of genetically defective pregnancies, and result in healthier children," says Wyrobek. "The research also raises a broader question beyond sperm DNA: How might lifestyle factors, including higher intakes of antioxidants and micronutrients, protect somatic as well as germ cells against age-related genomic damage?"

$29 for 20-Minute Teeth-Whitening Session ($139 Value)

A qualified technician applies an efficient brush-on solution under an LED lamp that emits blue light to quickly lift stains and whiten teeth. The procedure can leave smiles two to eight shades brighter in a mere 20 minutes.

Whiten My Smile Now

Whiten My Smile Now helps one brighten their teeth while also saving them a trip to the dentist. It?s a convenience that has rapidly ascended in popularity: over 30,000 clients have sought out the service since 2008. But the specially trained technicians haven?t let the number intimidate them. They still take the time to prepare every person with a consultation before assessing current teeth shades with a chart that ranges from ?yellow? to ?cartoon ding.? Patients then recline beneath an LED light for approximately 20 minutes, which activates a whitening gel applied by the technician. Following, the procedure, clients examine the color chart to see how their teeth have changed in color.

Physician's Plan

Chris DiOrio, DO and his wife Armella lead the management team at Physician's Plan. As the company's medical director and lead physician, Dr. DiOrio uses his expertise and board certification in emergency and critical-care medicine, along with extensive training through the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, to treat weight-related conditions. And though Armella was once headed toward a career testing other people's hearing as an audiologist, she now spends her days relying on her own ears, listening carefully to clients' needs and sharing their exuberance as they drop excess pounds.

The philosophy of the medical and clinical staff maintains that obesity?like diabetes, high blood pressure, or disco fever?is a disease rather than a failure of willpower. They take a multifaceted approach to weight loss, assigning each patient a personal counselor to provide support in the areas of behavior modification and nutrition, and custom plans might also incorporate tools such as lipotropic injections or medications. As a reward for their successes, patients can also schedule spa services including exfoliating HydraFacials, chemical peels, and massages, or ensure faces match their trim, youthful bodies with Botox, Juvederm, or Radiesse.

Two- or Three-Night Stay for Up to Four at Marina Inn Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach

Tranquil Four-Star Resort with Two Championship Golf Courses

Situated along the Intracoastal Waterway, Marina Inn at Grande Dunes initially presents a fountain-and-palm-tree fa?ade fairly typical of Myrtle Beach's many resorts. But the unassuming exterior belies a homey, highly personal experience that begins in the lobby, where check in occurs not across a chest-high counter but at one of two old-fashioned wooden desks. A concierge is on hand to book tee times at the onsite championship golf courses or dispense tips on the multitude of family-friendly attractions within reach of the inn.

In each of the 450-square-foot Grande guest rooms, a sliding door reveals a terrace where padded wicker chairs offer a cozy spot to take in views of the waterway or marina. The room's lavish bathrooms are stocked with Vive bath products and diamond-encrusted rubber duckies.

At Waterscapes Restaurant, Chef Robbie Nicolaisen personally selects fresh-caught seafood for entrees ranging from crispy oysters to black bass. The upscale eatery supports local farmers and surprises dinner guests with an unexpected post-meal treat?a freshly spun tuft of pink cotton candy.

One of the resort's two golf courses?the Grande Dunes Resort Club?was named National Course of the Year in 2009 by the National Golf Course Owners Association. In warmer weather, you can take a dip in the infinity-edge pool, open year-round, or relax on the resort's private-access beachfront, which is open on weekends through September 30.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Coastal Adventure and Exotic Wildlife

Myrtle Beach is the crown jewel of South Carolina's Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of beaches along the Atlantic seaboard. On the city's newly built boardwalk, you can browse eclectic boutiques and go for a spin on the 200-foot SkyWheel Ferris wheel. From the hotel, a 10-minute drive north leads to Barefoot Landing, home to shops, restaurants, and TIGERS Preservation Station. The free exhibit provides an up-close look at rare and endangered tigers, including siberians, royal white bengals, and the ferocious golden tabby.

Dogtastic Dog Training

Cooper got a rough start in life. At just three months old, the doberman-hound mix was found on the side of the road, a plastic bag over his head. Thankfully, Cooper's owners rescued him soon after, but his experiences left him with separation anxiety, aggression, and resistance to basic commands. Enter Glenn Shue, owner and lead trainer of Dogtastic Dog Training. Glenn's approach begins by first considering each canine's unique personality, which helps him tailor a training program that combines obedience training with proper socialization. Through one-on-one work with Cooper and his family, Glenn saw the pup through many of his behavioral problems, and he continues rehabilitating Cooper with occasional attention at daycare.

A graduate of Highland Canine Training?s school for dog trainers, Glenn and his team apply his teaching principles in each of their training programs. With an indoor training space at All Wags North, they organize group obedience classes and in-kennel training, as well as puppy training that focuses on building healthy social skills. Services further extend to private in-home training, where instructors teach dogs how to sit, stay, and mix martinis. Glenn's team also specializes in behavior modification for pets with aggression problems.

Three Days and Two Nights of Boarding, or Five Days of Daycare at All Wags Doggie Daycare and Boarding North (56% Off)

All Wags Doggie Daycare and Boarding North

In 2005, Karen McCombs left the corporate world. It was a big decision, but she had a simple reason: "I just decided I wanted to play with dogs," she says. Today, two of her sons work at the original All Wags location in Charlotte, and she and Josh Hartsell?another son?have headed out to open All Wags Doggie Daycare and Boarding North in Harrisburg. They've painted the 9,000 square feet of indoor play space with colorful canine murals, but there's also plenty of room outdoors for a dog to play ball, leap into kiddie pools, or plant its owner's flag on the peaks of plastic playground equipment.

The staff takes the time to get to know each dog, from their names to what they like and what they're scared of?and Karen says the dogs are excited to come in and play. She makes sure the staff ratio stays at about 10 dogs to 1 staff member during doggy daycare so that pooches get plenty of attention and exercise. Except for a two-hour rest period, the dogs are out and about the entire time, rather than being cooped up alone at home or made to sit in a cage and nibble listlessly on homework. "It's just a fun, exhausting day for [the dogs]," she says. "They go home and they're very tired." Dogs who are staying the night play with daycare dogs during the day, then retire to 4'x8' kennels with heating and cooling. To make sure everyone's safe, all supervisors are certified in pet first aid by the American Red Cross and have been endorsed by multiple doggy-sniff committees.

For Karen, working with her canine customers has been rewarding, and she knows their human owners appreciate the time she and her staff take to get to know their dogs and individuals. "Everybody's just so happy and ready to see you. It's not like that in the corporate world anymore," she says.

Wags In the City

Born into an animal-loving family that housed pets ranging from birds to ferrets and dogs to pigs, Beth Hahn naturally developed a passion for caring for domestic animals. At only 26, she boasts a seven-year history in the pet industry; her resume lists off her experience in boarding, doggy daycare, overnight pet sitting, grooming, and more. In April of 2009, she funneled her childhood passion and professional experiences into Wags In the City?a pet-service provider she hopes will exceed customer expectations. To do this, she rounded up a team of passionate caretakers committed to offering pet owners comprehensive pet-care services, such as overnight sitting, transportation, and translating barks during negotiations over couch-sitting privileges. Hahn aspires to go above and beyond traditional businesses, and during at-home pet visits the team throws in additional complimentary services, including watering plants and taking out the trash. Because she wants to ensure both pets and owners live in a great community, her business also gives back to the Charlotte area, donating time, services, and money.
