HBT: Red Sox unlikely to trade Beckett

There have been a fair amount of rumblings and rumors regarding Josh Beckett. But ? and this is no surprise ? it?s likely not happening.

?

Beckett has 10/5 rights, so he would have to approve anything and, though he has said he would ?consider? any trade possibilities brought to him, he also says he?d prefer to stay in Boston. Then you figure that (a) he?s sort of at a baseball value nadir at the moment; and (b) he?s owed $15.75 million each of the next two years, it?s hard to see why anyone would want to deal for him.

Renting office space | Van Nuys Offices

The economic recession and worldwide financial crisis haven?t exactly been a fortunate thing for small businesses. But one area where the uproar has created opportunities for entrepreneurs is in renting real estate space.

Rental prices are coming down across the board from top triple A office buildings in Beverly Hills to strip malls and freestanding office buildings in smaller markets.? For many, the question of whether to rent an office space on their own or find office space to rent in another firm?s business comes down to the nature of their business and their tolerance for dealing with the inevitable challenges of shared environments. Privacy, client confidentiality, personality traits, etc. can all factor into one?s ability to benefit from shared office space. If you?re starting out in business then one of the main aims is to keep costs low. After all, with little money coming in and quite a lot probably going out, it makes sense to be thrifty when it comes to costs. That?s probably why so many entrepreneurs start their ventures at home, and continue to work in a spare bedroom, study or even garage until things establish themselves.

Working from home might seem to be obviously cheaper than hiring out desk or office space, but in the current climate with lots of property available, office space rental isn?t the costly exercise you might think it to be.? When you rent a separate space it?s easier to bring clients into your office. Even a small office can project a professional image. Greater productivity. Without the interruptions of home, you will have more time to actually get work done. ?In fact, thanks to the recession, many landlords are simply keen to hire out their dead office space, and so as a result, prices are actually more competitive than ever. Just remember the most important rule, in business everything is negotiable because you can always walk away and find someone else.

Now that you have decided that its better to rent an office space.? Check out www.vannnuysoffices.com.? Van Nuys Offices has a wide variety of spaces available for rent starting at $195 on busy Van Nuys Blvd. in Van Nuys CA.? Few blocks near the 405 and 101 freeways and walking distance from the Van Nuys Courthouse. Our buildings are under 24/7 surveillance, ?you have 24hr access and your own private mailbox.

News Summary: Corn prices climb on relentless heat

RELENTLESS SUMMER: Corn raced to a record high price as the hot, dry weather relentlessly pounded crops. Soybeans also rose. Expectations continue to mount that harvests will be smaller than anticipated for both crops.

PUMP IT UP: Natural gas jumped 6.6 percent as utilities bought more of the fuel to generate electricity during the hot summer. The recent jump in prices probably won't impact utility bills because utilities lock in prices to protect themselves.

MIXED BAG: Prices for gold, silver, wheat and gasoline rose. Oil, heating oil and copper prices fell.

(AP) ? Queen Elizabeth II toured London's Olympic heartland Saturday hours after she surprised a worldwide audience by starring as the newest Bond Girl.

The queen got a bird's eye view of the Olympic Park complex atop the 377-foot (115-meter) Orbit sculpture beside the stadium, where on Friday night she officially opened the 2012 Games. Her husband, Prince Philip, and London Mayor Boris Johnson accompanied her as she rode up two floors in the sculpture's elevator to meet designer Anish Kapoor.

Dressed in a royal blue silk dress, crepe coat and matching hat, the queen could be heard remarking at the views of the London skyline and countryside up to 20 miles (32 kilometers) away. She was also wearing a brooch given to her in 1948, the last time London hosted the Olympics and four years before her accession to the throne.

Johnson said the queen had told him she was "very, very impressed with the success of her first film appearance, her first dramatic venture. It was very funny and seems to have gone down particularly well with the international audiences."

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 86-year-old monarch agreed last year to participate in Danny Boyle's film portion of his four-hour opening ceremony extravaganza. Filming took place at the palace in March and April and featured two of the queen's corgi dogs: Monty and Holly.

Boyle's production involved Daniel Craig, the current James Bond, striding into Buckingham Palace to escort his VIP guest to the Olympic ceremony. Many watching had expected a famous actress to play the role of the queen, and untold thousands in the audience audibly gasped as the real-life queen was seen to swivel round in her desk chair and declare: "Good evening, Mr. Bond."

At the end of the film segment, two stuntmen dressed as Bond and the queen parachuted from a helicopter into the stadium, and moments later Elizabeth and Philip emerged in the stands.

Boyle told NBC television that the queen had been a natural. "You don't have to tell her something twice," he said. "She picks it up straight away, about cameras and angles."

The scenes were filmed in March and April, after the queen agreed to take part last year.

The queen offered more surprises Saturday as she paid a walking visit to the athletes village and met about 150 members of the British Olympic team. Spectators took in the scene from balconies draped in Union Jack flags.

"For her to come through and meet the athletes, and see where we're living, it was amazing," said Rose Anderson, 24, a member of the women's basketball team.

"She went inside one of the athletes' bedrooms and chatted to us. It was just awesome, especially after last night," she said, referring to the opening ceremony. "Last night will never be topped. I'll never get an experience like that again, and then this will never be topped either."

The queen also met athletes from other nations in the dining hall.

"She's beautiful," said Jess Fox, who competes for Australia in the canoe slalom. "We saw her from afar last night in the stadium, but it was amazing to see her like this."

LIKE A FARMYARD

The animals have just come into the stadium. That is 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and nine geese. One of those horses is a shire horse. The music is starting to build and there are camera flashes all around the stadium. What will the animals make of that?

MANY COLORS

They've come from all over for these games and this opening ceremony. Fans seen filing into Olympic Stadium wearing the colors of Canada, Mexico, Poland, Italy, Russia, Germany, Brazil and seemingly all points in between.

That includes the most well-represented nation, of course: Team GB.

NO RAIN - YET

There's been so much talk about the British weather and if rain would spoil the opening ceremony. Well, it's still anyone's guess.

CEREMONY SECURITY

Security lines, or lack thereof, are moving easily at the Olympic Park. It does feel a bit like stumbling onto a military base ? fresh-faced young soldiers in uniform are everywhere, and every single X-ray machine and scanner is manned by soldiers rather than other organizing committee staff.

So many soldiers that some are just standing around, waiting for a crushof spectators that has not yet materialized.

PRESIDENTIAL FRIENDS

Maya Moore has spent so much time with the Obama family, she could be an honorary member.

She was the only female basketball player invited to play with the President in a game to celebrate his 49th birthday in 2010. She also did a soon to be released public service announcement with Michelle Obama in May supporting the "Let's Move!" campaign.

The two shared a hug and chatted for a few minutes Friday morning after the first lady opened her stint as leader of the U.S. Olympics delegation attending a breakfast with Olympians.

"That was a little treat," Moore says. "Any time I can see the president or first lady it's such a treat. She's someone who you can relate to because she's very active and enjoys sports. We know that whole family loves basketball."

EXCITED

Less than an hour before showtime and excited visitors are filing into Olympic Stadium.

Tarik Lacene, a Canadian who lives in London, scored tickets to the opening ceremony.

THE ANTICIPATION

From AP's Fergus Bell in place and awaiting the opening ceremony:

"A Mexican wave just started. The crowd are getting fired up. The scene is set on the stage in front of me depicting a rural idyll. There are tractors and a water wheel. There is a small cottage in the middle with two smoking chimneys. I have seen similar scenes in the English countryside but this looks a little cleaner, a little more fairytale.

GETTING THERE

AP's Cassandra Vinograd reports from the streets ? well, the railway tracks ? of London:

This reporter was in a bit of a panic ? left work late and wondered how she would ever get through the crowds to board a train to Olympic Park.

But tubes were not crowded and St. Pancras International, where you catch the high speed Javelin train, is a breeze. There were no lines whatsoever to get on the Javelin ? despite crowd-flow measures (barricades, like what airports use for long check-in lines). The line spaces were all empty.

The only glitch was a few travelers grumbling over a broken ticket machine, leaving only one working dispenser on the Javelin platform.

But no worries in the end. With so few jostling for space, everyone got a ticket in time.

NO KNOCKOFFS

Egypt's Olympic team won't be wearing knockoffs after all at the London Games.

Nike announced Friday it was donating its gear to the Egyptian athletes. This after the country's committee chairman said they'd turned to a Chinese distributor because the real thing was just too expensive.

Not so during the opening ceremony, though. Nike's shipment isn't due to arrive in London until Saturday.

WHITE RIBBONS

The widow of Alexander Litvinenko, the exiled former Russian agent who died from a mysterious case of radiation poisoning, is calling on Londoners to protest Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the Olympics.

Litvinenko issued a statement shortly before his 2006 death, accusing Putin of ordering him to be poisoned. He had been living in London since fleeing Russia in 2000. In a book written in exile, he accused Russia's main security agency, for which he once worked, of staging the 1999 apartment building bombings that were blamed on Chechen rebels and used as a justification for starting the second Chechen war.

British-Russian relations suffered a serious setback in 2007 after Russia refused to extradite the man that Britain named as the main suspect in Litvinenko's death.

Marina Litvinenko on Friday issued a statement saying "Mr. Putin's agents killed my husband" and called on Londoners wo wear white ribbons, the emblem of the Russian opposition, to proest Putin's visit Aug. 2 that is to include watching the judo.

___

WHERE TO WATCH?

AP's Jenna Fryer reports from the streets of London:

Is there no such thing as a sports bar here?

Looking for a pub where I can hang with the locals and watch the opening ceremony is proving to be more challenging than I expected.

Since arriving, I've noticed that not that many pubs have televisions, so I've had to ask around for recommendations for the ceremonies. The first two I called ? one of which was the favorite watering hole of the late Amy Winehouse ? said they had no plans to show the ceremonies. "Tonight's just a regular pub night," I was told.

It seemed strange to see bars without TV's, but to not have such a big event blaring from every television in the country tonight is just bizarre.

PREPPED FOR HISTORY

Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has arrived in London for his historic debut at the Olympics and says he's feeling "a mixture of pride, happiness and anticipation" at the end of his long journey to compete at the highest level in able-bodied competition.

Pistorius made the short flight across from his training camp in northern Italy and says he's "really excited" to attend the opening ceremony.

The South African has been battling for four years to reach the 2012 games. He was cleared to compete against able-bodied competitors on his carbon fiber blades in 2008, ran two qualifying times for London in the last 12 months, but missed out on the crucial third under his country's strict qualifying criteria.

But the selectors had a last-minute change of heart weeks before the games and picked him for the individual 400 meters as well as the 4x400 relay.

In an email to the AP, Pistorius says: "This feels like a long time coming and I am ready! This is going to be, I hope, an incredible few weeks of my life."

His first run at the Olympics will be in the 400 heats on Aug. 4. It'll be history.

FOOD WITH NO NAME

Food choices are simple at the ExCel arena, the giant convention center hosting seven Olympic disciplines. Because McDonald's has exclusive rights to sell branded products, the dozen concessions at the venue are prohibited from using a specific name.

So, here's what's on offer on large signs:

?"Traditional Roast."

?"Sandwich."

?"Bagel"

?"Italian" or "Chinese."

? "Baked Potato" ? which, by the way, is often called a "jacket potato" in these parts.

KEEP DREAM-ING

You get the sense that LeBron James doesn't want to hear another word about it.

"Who's better ? 1992 or 2012?" That's been a talking point for weeks, the comparison between the 1992 Dream Team that went to Barcelona and this year's Olympic team.

"It's never going to happen," James said Friday of a hypothetical game between the two teams. "It doesn't matter how much conversation that we have about this team and the '92 Dream Team. It's never going to be played. Father Time is not going to allow that to happen. So it doesn't even matter."

That wasn't his way of downplaying expectations about what to expect from the U.S. squad in London.

Quite the contrary.

James, who won the NBA MVP award, the NBA Finals MVP award and led the Miami Heat to the title this past season, is fully expecting to add Olympic gold to his unbelievable year.

"I know one thing," James said. "I know we have a great team. And if we play as a team, like we're capable of doing, we can be one of the best teams ever assembled.

16 Cats Rescued From Filthy, Hot Garage | FOX8.com ? Cleveland ...

Posted on: 8:06 pm, July 27, 2012, by Annette Lawless, updated on: 12:52pm, July 28, 2012

GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio ? A local tip leads to a horrific discovery: 16 cats locked in a garage in some of the worst conditions in Geauga County.

?The cats would have died,? said Hope Brustein, director of the Geauga Humane Society?s Rescue Village. ?I think we were convinced of that, especially with the heat wave, and what that does to an enclosed space where there?s no air, that they were facing loss of life.?

The cats were neglected by their owners, not only left in the heat but also soiled in feces and waste, Brustein said. The owners willingly gave up the animals from their home late last month.

?Unbelievable filth. These cats were not getting new litter,? she said. ?These cats were not in an area that was cleaned. We did have to deal with all kinds of parasites and ear mites and things of that nature. Luckily, they did not end up having serious disease problems.?

Now, some of the cats are up for adoption. Nearly 1,800 are rescued by the Humane Society each year.

?At times, we can?t touch them at first. It takes a while for them to let us touch them. Those we can touch, we start with simple petting,? said cat volunteer Brenda Donahue. ?It?s happy and sad. We?re happy that we?re helping them, but it?s sad that they?re in bad situations.?

The cats range from about one to four years old. While some of them still remain sick, Brustein is eager to find the furry felines new owners and a new life.

?We?re really, really happy, similar to the big shepherd rescue that people may have heard about, that we think we?re going to get happy endings and second chances for all these animals,? she said.

Seriously folks, it?s that simple to understand.. If you walked into a room and asked everyone ?who?s hungry??, the people who raised there hands would be your interested individuals. Internet marketing is slightly different because the value chain feels less tangible to a lot of people than a traditional business. What I mean by this is that, for many people, understanding the process of acquiring leads and creating customers in a virtual space is daunting, foreign and hard to conceptualize at first. But here are the key differences that should help you relate traditional business models to internet ones:

1. Just like brick and mortar, you need leads to make your business work.

What?s different: Leads come in the form of Names, Emails and/or Phone Numbers instead of literally walking through your door

2. You need something to sell your customer a product or service to make money

What?s different: Customers online have a much lower attention span, as a result of this you need to have a stack of continually higher margin items to offer them immediately after they purchase to maximize your revenue. This is known as an up-sell, or moving them ?through the funnel?.

3. Customers want and need information from you to stay interested in being your customer.

What?s different: A brick and mortar business has to try and hire in-person sales people who try and be helpful to your customers while practicing ABC (Always Be Closing). Online you can use different ways of tracking and automated content strategies to tailor the experience of every customer in a way that you can test. This means you can have a known close rate and give your customers a consistently high level of value. Why It?s Seen As Snake Oil

I?ve worked with some of the biggest names in the Internet Marketing space who have claimed huge numbers and it became apparent pretty quickly that most people at the top stretch their numbers to fit what they think people want to hear.

The messed up part? It works ? Internet Marketing and Web Traffic gets results. You see, these types of people typically succeed by selling the dream instead of solving any actual problems. They will talk your ear off about how much ?value? their customers see in their offerings, but once you understand the industry it doesn?t take long to see that the average customer is more of an info product junkie than a true entrepreneur.

It?s no wonder so many real businesses are turned off by Internet Marketing when that is the lay of the land.

Have you had any poor experiences with Internet Marketing? Let me know ? I?d be happy to point you in a quality direction or help answer your questions.[Photo Credit]

Paul Watson, Canadian founder and president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, has skipped bail in Germany, where he was facing possible extradition to Costa Rica on charges stemming from a high-seas confrontation over shark finning in 2002.

By NBC News' Carlo Angerer and wire reports

MAINZ, Germany -- Environmental activist Paul Watson has skipped bail in Germany, according to a court statement.

The Canadian founder of the Sea Shepherd marine conservation group?was arrested at the Frankfurt airport in May on a Costa Rican warrant that claimed he had endangered the crew of a fishing vessel.

Watson was released days after his arrest on a $320,000 bail and ordered to report regularly to police. But he failed to check in with authorities and his attorney told the court that he had left the country for an undisclosed location.

"Watson has not reported to the police since July 22," a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt said.?"We do not know where Watson is at the moment."?

The public prosecutor's office told NBC News that a nationwide search has been launched in case Watson is still in Germany. The prosecutor has also requested that the $320,000 bail be paid out to the German state.

Watson is known for waging aggressive campaigns to protect whales, dolphins and other marine animals.?

He had been awaiting possible extradition over the charges stemming from his campaign against shark fining,?a practice that involves catching sharks, slicing off their fins and throwing them back into the sea, sometimes barely alive.

After being freed on bail in May, Watson made a brief appearance in Berlin at a protest coinciding with a visit by Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla.

Chinchilla has promised Watson a fair trial if he is extradited to her country.

Interest in auto repair paves the way to a bright future for local ...

Scott Martin has turned his love of working on cars into success in competition and a way to build his skills. He was recognized by the Grain Valley Board of Aldermen Monday, after his participation in the recent Skills USA competition. His training in automotive service at the Career and Technology Center (CTC) in the Fort Osage School District led to Martin competing in the national competition. Shannon Lineberry | THE POINTE

Grain Valley?s Scott Martin never expected that a hobby he cultivated out of a friend?s garage would make him a top student in the automotive repair field. But after receiving state and national recognition for his skills as an automotive service technician, he should have no doubt about his place in the automotive world.

Martin competed in the Skills USA competition at Bartle Hall in June, taking top honors at the state level; that made him the only student in the history of the Fort Osage Career and Technology Center?s (CTC) automotive repair program to ever go to the national competition. Prior to his entrance into the national competition, the CTC had only placed as high as 3rd at the state level.

The competition tests students at 13 different stations. Students must evaluate and follow directions on all types of repairs, from how to check for leaks in your work gloves to how to check for bad sensors for air conditioning. Competitors have 22 minutes to complete each station.

Martin competed with 52 other high school students, placing a respectable 6th place out of the 52 competitors. All this with only a few days preparation for the competition, relying only on contest updates from the organization and attempt to round out his knowledge based on what he thought he might see on the exam.

?We get the contest update and we have a general idea. But we don?t know everything.? Martin said. ?Like we didn?t have a manual transmission to practice with, and that was on the test. Then we practiced using a scan tool. I went and met with some people from Toyota and they showed me how to navigate the scan tool.?

Martin graduated from Grain Valley High School this year and was a National Technical Honor Society recipient, student council member, soccer player, and was a four-year member of the robotics team. He also worked mission trips throughout high school, which earned him several hundred hours of community service.

But it was the call of the CTC program and his love of robotics that occupied most of his time. Martin said that his experience with robotics helped him get through the electrical pieces of automotive competitions much faster.

Based off of advice he got from a friend working on muscle cars in the garage, Martin entered the program at CTC his junior year of high school. He won the district competition that year, and was the only junior to make it to the state level, where he finished 6th out of 15 students at state.

This year, in addition to the national SkillsUSA competition, Martin also competed on May 10 for the Ford AAA Auto Skills Competition at Kansas Speedway. Competitors qualify for the contest by taking an exam that sends the top two candidates for state level competition. Once there, the students have 1 ? hours to fix 10 problems on a 2012 Ford Fusion.

To prepare for the contest, Martin and another student borrowed a Fusion from Blue Springs Ford and spent three weeks dismantling the car, checking its internal workings and getting to know every piece. Their diligence paid off and they finished all repairs on the car in 32 minutes. Despite having the only perfect car in the competition, the boys finished 6th.

Because automotive technology was always a hobby for Martin, he?s not sure what his career plans are at this point. He will be attending Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas, a highly rated Division 2 engineering school. He plans to major in Manufacturing and Engineering.

?I?m hoping for an internship my freshman year,? Martin said. ?A lot of graduates go to John Deere and Case and Toro. The teacher there knows people around the world. You don?t know where you?re going to end up.?

Obama Addresses Gun Control Following Aurora Shooting (VIDEO)

In one of his most direct statements on gun control since his election, President Barack Obama Wednesday called for a "common sense" approach to assault rifle sales in light of Friday's mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., saying no "mentally unbalanced individual" should be able to get their hands on such weapons.

"I, like most Americans, believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms," Obama told the National Urban League convention in New Orleans. "I think we recognize the traditions of gun ownership that passed on from generation to generation. That hunting and shooting are part of a cherished national heritage."

Obama continued: "But I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals. That they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities. I believe the majority of gun owners would agree we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons, and we should check someone's criminal record before they can check out a gun seller."

The president called for new restrictions barring mentally unstable people from purchasing weapons.

"These steps shouldn't be controversial," Obama said. "They should be common sense."

Police investigating the Aurora shooting said they believe James Holmes legally purchased four guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition used to kill 12 people, including an AR-15 assault rifle with a 100-round magazine.

Obama pledged to work with lawmakers from both parties to reduce violence "at every level." He noted that government can't repair everything that plays into a killer's actions.

"We must also understand that when a child opens fire on other children, there's a hole in his heart that no government can fill," Obama said.

Obama has avoided the gun debate in recent years, despite his past gun control advocacy. HuffPost's Sam Stein reported on the transformation earlier this week:

As Obama embarked on his presidential campaign in 2008, the pressures of a Democratic primary required him to appeal to voters who valued stronger gun control laws. That became complicated following his "cling to guns" statement at a private fundraiser in Pennsylvania and as he distanced himself from 1996 questionnaire in which he called for banning "the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns" (his campaign would claim an aide erroneously answered the question).

But as that primary turned into a general election, he didn't drop the issue. In fact, he gave it a memorable mention at his highest-profile address.

"The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than they are for those plagued by gang violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals," Obama declared at the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

For all the talk of unassailable logic of certain gun policies, however, the Obama presidency has seen virtually no corresponding legislative action. Part of that was because of a jam-packed legislative plate.

Tips To Make Home Improvement Projects See Easy - Boston ...

If you are not sure that you have the necessary knowledge to do a particular home improvement project, you should do the necessary research. Knowledge is important for home improvement, so don?t hesitate to read this article.

Plan out all the changes you want to add to your home before you even start a project. This helps you stay on budget and within the time frame you set for yourself. Changing your plan in the middle can create problems both from a practical and monetary perspective. You will also be able to save quite a bit of money by having a plan in place before hiring a contractor.

Do you want an elegant upgrade to your home that doesn?t break the bank? Replace the doorbell in your home to spice up the aura for your visitors. Completing this small project will give your front door an entirely new atmosphere.

It?s always important to check that any new lighting added to bathrooms is as bright as you need it to be. It can be easy to lose focus as you incorporate new fixtures and looks. This can make it easy to overlook lighting needs. Purchase lights to install above your medicine cabinet and mirror, and use a ceiling light with easy access to the bulb when it needs changing.

The high costs of replacing carpeting in your entryway and hallways is rarely justifiable. Even a few months of a rainy season can wreak havoc on the flooring in high traffic areas of your home. Then you will need to replace it. That?s why it?s better to install rugged materials, such as linoleum, in these areas.

Make good use of a home?s entrance by placing organizational tools just inside the doorway. Set it up as a good place to store overshoes, umbrellas, hats, scarves and coats, as well as a good place to deposit keys, outgoing mail and other items that might be needed by people coming and going. These additions can also add to the organization in your living space and reduce mess.

Ask your family members and friends for help before you start your next project to improve your home. If you do not do this in the beginning of you project, it may be hard to find help. You might have a hard time finishing on time, which would add more stress.

A home improvement upgrade that offers a substantial return is a new steel entry door. Based on research into the increased resale value represented by steel doors, a homeowner who installs one can expect to make back 129% of its cost when the time comes to sell his or her home. Steel doors also make your house more attractive and energy-efficient.

When you are looking for a home improvement contractor, ensure that they have insurance. If they damage your house without insurance, you are going to need to take them to course in order to get reparaations for that. You simply need to inquire as to whether your contractor can show proof of his or her insurance.

As was previously stated, a homeowner that is inexperienced could suffer great difficulty completing a project successfully. The difference between failure and success in a home improvement project can come down to having the right kind of help. Use the tips laid out here to start a home renovation project and do it well.

Tight Line Exteriors can be a customer-driven contractor of top quality replacement Siding Windows Doors and Gutters situated Marietta Georgia. Of flies and men

Friday, July 20, 2012

What do you get when you dissect 10 000 fruit-fly larvae? A team of researchers led by the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) in the UK and the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics (MPI) in Freiburg, Germany has discovered a way in which cells can adjust the activity of many different genes at once. Their findings, published in the journal Science, overturn commonly held views and reveal an important mechanism behind gender differences.

Asifa Akhtar's laboratory, previously at EMBL now at MPI, studies precisely how flies regulate an important set of genes. Females have two X chromosomes while males have only one, so the genes on the female X chromosomes somehow need to be kept from producing twice as many proteins as those on the male X chromosome. Male fruit flies get around this by making their X chromosome's genes work double time: an epigenetic enzyme doubles the output of thousands of different genes. But just how much that doubled output is can vary tremendously from one gene to the next.

"Imagine that you have thousands of half-filled glasses of all different sizes and shapes," explains Nick Luscombe, who led the work at EMBL-EBI. "Now imagine that you have to fill them all up to the top at the same time. This is an incredibly complex mechanism."

To see how genes are expressed, scientists try to pinpoint signals that show when a gene increases its output. In most studies of this kind, this output is increased by a factor of between 10 and 100 when a gene is being expressed. In this study, the signal involved is miniscule: an increase of only a factor of two.

Observing such a faint signal is a major challenge. But thanks to the painstaking fly-larvae dissection efforts of graduate student Thomas Conrad, combined with the detailed analytical efforts of Florence Cavalli and Juanma Vaquerizas, the team gathered enough material to measure this output and compare males and females directly.

The scientists found twice as many DNA-transcribing (reading) proteins ? known as polymerases ? attached to the male X chromosome as to the female version. This means that the difference between males and females is rooted in the beginning of the transcription process, when the polymerase first binds to the DNA. This goes against the commonly held view that the regulation mechanism is kicked off during transcription.

"A factor of two appears miniscule, so it is not easy to measure accurately," says Akhtar. "We were really doing a bulk analysis of several hundred genes, and that required a lot of careful bioinformatics analysis. Our group would run experiments, Nick's would analyse the data, and then we would decide on new experiments together to be sure that what we were seeing was real."

Discovering the machinery that doubles the expression of male X-chromosome genes could well have implications that go far beyond the humble fly. Speaking more technically, Luscombe says: "This is the first direct, clear mechanism that links a histone modification and the activity of a polymerase across thousands of genes".

Looking into future directions, Akhtar says: "We now need to look more deeply into what makes this kind of mass regulation possible, and how it fits in with other means cells may have to fine-tune their use of genetic information."

Computers and the Tragedy of the Commons | Michael MacKay's ...

People who use computers and networks are very comfortable with discussing questions of how these resources are to be used, but are very uncomfortable discussing what they should be used for, or why. ?The technical mind-set prefers to dwell on considerations of means over ends, and computers are very much utilitarian objects. ?Computers are how-to devices, and computer users and administrators and programmers prefer to be how-to problem solvers using them.

We can't avoid the questions of what we should do with computers or why we need them, though, and the sooner we ask these questions the better. The reason for the urgency is that computers and networks face the classic dilemma of all shared resources known as the "tragedy of the commons."

We can?t avoid the questions of what we should do with computers or why we need them, though, and the sooner we ask these questions the better. ?The reason for the urgency is that computers and networks face the classic dilemma of all shared resources known as the ?tragedy of the commons.? ?Technical advances and innovation can only delay the inevitable, and put off the day when we must come to terms with this tragedy.

What is the tragedy of the commons? ?Simply put, it is the idea that any resource that is held in common, or shared by individuals, will ultimately be destroyed. ?The reason this is so is that we have a private experience of the benefits of a common resource, and do not immediately perceive the effect that will be produced when all individuals maximize their self-interest with respect to what is ultimately a limited resource.

The classic model of the tragedy of the commons is presented as follows. ?Suppose there is a village where everyone has a cow, and where there is a common pasture for grazing cattle. ?The pasture is a shared and a limited resource, and it is in the interest of the village that its benefits be apportioned equitably and with a view to the sustainability of the pasture over many seasons. ?Each villager actually owns only one cow, though, and nobody owns the pasture. ?It is in the interest of every individual to graze his own cow for the maximum amount of time over the widest possible area of the common pasture. ?That way, he can maximize his return on investment in his cow. ?But every individual who rationally pursues his own best interest will be doing the same thing. ?The net result will be over-grazing, likely leading to the starvation of all the cattle and the ruin of the village. ?This will happen because each individual does what is right and proper for him to do in his own self-interest. ?Hence the term tragedy.

This is not some abstract exercise. ?Real economic and political crises can be understood using this model. ?One example that comes to mind is the collapse of the cod fishery in Newfoundland. ?Nobody owns a fish in the sea, and only by catching a fish does someone gain an economic interest in it. ?Cod were once as abundant as air in the seas around Newfoundland. ?It is said that the explorer Cabot dropped wooden buckets from the sides of his ship and each one he pulled up was filled with cod. ?Catching these fish, salting them, and shipping them to Europe became the economic mainstay of Newfoundland. ?But this common resource was ultimately destroyed. ?It is in the interest of every individual fisherman to catch as many fish as he can, and advances in technology such as thin-mesh nets, gill nets, and vacuuming fish from the sea bed became cruelly efficient means of wiping out the cod stocks. ?Now, there is no commercial cod fishery at all. ?No individual did anything wrong, but collectively the short-sightedness of all destroyed their livelihoods.

So where do computers come in? ?Computers have resources like CPU cycles, memory, data storage capacity, and network bandwidth to transmit data over a distance. ?All of these are common resources, but all of them are experienced by the user individually. ?Since the days of mainframes, computers have been timesharing devices. ?They do a ?juggling act? with the jobs they are asked to do, doing a few milliseconds of work at at time before shuffling off to do some work on another user?s task. ?Each individual user experiences progress in his own job, as if the computer was dedicating itself to his needs alone, but in fact the computer is a true multi-tasker. ?The user is fooled into thinking he is being given continuous attention by the computer, much like a movie-goer is fooled into thinking he is watching a ?moving picture? ? when in fact he is watching a slide show with photographs presented at a rate of 24 frames per second, accompanied with a sound track.

Here?s where the tragic element comes in. ?If we all prioritized our jobs, we will hog CPU cycles to the detriment of all users, including ourselves. ?If we run our programs while stuck in memory they run much faster and more efficiently, but if we all do that then we quickly run out of room for all the processes. ?If we save everything we think might be useful in the future, we will use up a lot of disk capacity, and if we all do that we will ultimately run out of space. ?If we all hog network bandwidth for important downloads, then we all suffer from poor performance. ?The consequences of computers being a collective resource come back to haunt us, but that isn?t factored in when we use them in the first place.

The reason we have not come to terms with the tragedy of the commons with respect to computers is that we have effectively avoided that by simply throwing more resources into the pool. ?CPUs get faster, physical memory on workstations gets greater, disk capacity grows, and network bandwidth gets better. ?Google Mail can tell its users to ?never delete another email!? because they keep adding disk capacity. ?No one needs to ever come to terms with the fact that saving that latest viral joke mail message has taken up bytes in a shared and finite space held in common with all the other users of Google Mail. ?Can this go on forever? ?Logic says no. ?We can build more and more freeways, for example, but we won?t ?solve? the problem of traffic congestion that way. ?We?ll only put off the day when we need to come up with a real transit plan to move people efficiently between home and work.

Ultimately the way around the tragedy of the commons is to condition the morality of maximizing individual self interest. ?Politically, the ways of doing that have been coercively through domination or co-operatively through agreement. ?Cod fishermen in Newfoundland have been forced not to fish, and there is some evidence that the cod stocks may be recovering. ?Individual companies that maintain effective control over collections of computers and networks have done considerably better at avoiding the tragedy of the commons than has ?the Internet?, which is owned by and controlled by no one. ?Advances in technology might paper over the crisis, but the Internet faces destruction unless a change is made in the ?every man for himself? morality. ?IP addresses will run out, email inboxes will be choked with spam, network bandwidth with be saturated with real=time movie downloads, and so on ? all because each individual in the privacy of his own home or office does the most that he can with what is technically feasible, and is never brought to mind the collective force of what it is that he is doing.

Why did Neanderthals have such humongous right arms? (+video)

An analysis of Neanderthal bones indicates that they had disproportionately huge biceps and triceps on their right arms, and that spear thrusting does not seem to fully account for their lopsided muscles.?

The unusually powerful right arms of Neanderthals may not be due to a spear-hunting life as once suggested, but rather one often spent scraping animal skins for clothes and shelters, researchers say.

Interesting experiement video from BBC science show 'Neanderthal: The Rebirth'.

The Neanderthals are our closest known extinct relatives, who were probably less brutish and more like modern humans than commonly portrayed. Their brains were at least as large as ours. They controlled fire, expertly made stone tools, were proficient hunters, lived in complex social groups, buried their dead, and perhaps artfully wore feathers. Genetic research even suggests they interbred with modern humans.

Neanderthals apparently had unusually strong right arms, judging by their right humerus ? the long arm bone underlying the biceps and triceps ? which often boasted protrusions with which to attach powerful muscles.

"Neanderthals have really interesting upper bodies," researcher Colin Shaw, a biological anthropologist at the University of Cambridge in England, told LiveScience. "If you and I are both right-handed, you'd expect 4 to 13 percent asymmetry between our arms. Neanderthals have up to 50 percent or more asymmetry. They were doing something with their dominant arms that were either more intense or repetitive or both than we do today. The only population of modern people that we see who are similar are tennis players, who hit tennis balls many, many years aggressively." [Top 10 Mysteries of the First Humans]

Scientists had suggested these arms may have grown strong through regular underhanded spear-thrusting. "We thought to test that idea," Shaw said.

Shaw, along with colleagues at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Oxford, took measured electrical activity in the muscles of 13 right-handed men as they performed three different spear-thrusting tasks ? single thrusts followed by rapid withdrawals, repeated strikes, and strikes followed by pushing of the spear forward. They also analyzed the men as they carried out four different scraping tasks on carpets ? hacking, pushing and two kinds of pulling.

The experiments were done on men because most Neanderthal skeletons analyzed by scientists have been male. Female skeletons do show the asymmetry, but the small number of specimens makes it tough to say for sure whether Neanderthal females had uneven arms, too.

The researchers found that spear-thrusting led to significantly higher muscle activity on the left side of the body than on the right, opposite to what is seen in Neanderthal fossils.

"Spear-thrusting did not appear to explain the mystery," Shaw said.
