Slovenes choose leader amid uncertainty

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) ? Small, crisis-hit Slovenia is choosing a president on Sunday amid growing discontent with cost-cutting measures designed to avoid an international bailout.

The vote comes just days after anti-austerity protests in the capital erupted in clashes that left 15 people injured, triggering fears that the economic crisis could push the normally placid Alpine nation of 2 million into instability.

Developments in Slovenia are being closely watched in the European Union. The tiny eurozone nation has promised to follow through with budget cuts and banking changes so it won't have to ask for EU help.

The presidential runoff pits anti-austerity incumbent Danilo Turk against former Prime Minister Borut Pahor, who has supported some of the government's budget measures during his campaign. Pahor won more votes in the first round last month and is the front-runner in polls.

Although the presidency is a largely ceremonial post in Slovenia, the elected leader commands political authority and will play an important role in guiding Slovenes as the country faces painful reforms.

Worried Slovenes said they hoped the election would bring a sense of security.

"I think things will start to calm down from today," said 86-year-old retiree Mihael Grund, who ventured out early despite drizzle and cold to cast his ballot. "We have had so much tension recently and that is a big worry for us."

But, new protests are planned for next week. Thousands joined demonstrations in Ljubljana on Friday and in the second-largest city of Maribor earlier in the week. Both rallies ended in riots, with police using water cannons and tear gas to repel rock-throwing extremists.

Senior police official Stanislav Venger said on Saturday police was attacked by organized groups of hooligans who were prepared to fight ? unusual for Slovenia where demonstrations are usually calm and smaller in number.

Slovenia, which was once an economic star among EU newcomers when it joined in 2004, has faced one of the worst recessions of the 17 nations that use the euro currency. Its economy has shrunk more than 8 percent since 2009 and continues to decline, resulting in a sharp drop in exports and living standards and a surge in unemployment, which now stands at about 12 percent.

Prime Minister Janez Jansa's center-right government has launched pension and labor reform, made public sector cuts, and moved to recapitalize the nation's banks, which are at the center of the crisis because they are burdened by bad loans.

Pahor has called for unity in the face of the crisis, promising to "bring hope" to disillusioned Slovenes and show the EU that the country can pull out of the crisis on its own.

Turk, however, has been a fierce critic of the reform plans. He has argued that Jansa's cost-cutting has not been equally distributed and will only hurt the poorest, eliminating the long-cherished welfare state.

Analysts have warned that the turnout among Slovenia's 1,7 million voters could be low, in another sign of voters' discontent. Some Slovenes, like 35-year-old high-school teacher Igor Vulic, say that no politician can bring about any change and that Slovenia needs new leaders.

"They should just all go," he said.

ASU Startup AlphaStripe Raises Funding to Help Veterans and Military Tell Their Story

Funding comes from MAC6 incubator.

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) November 28, 2012

AlphaStripe, a student-led startup supported by ASU?s successful Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative, has received an undisclosed angel funding round and additional support from Tempe?s new MAC6 incubator. AlphaStripe is a global, online networking platform for veterans, military service members, and military families. AlphaStripe makes it easier for users to connect, network, and tell their own stories. Now, users can create an AlphaStripe account by simply signing in with Facebook and linking both social networks. In addition to this seed funding from MAC6, AlphaStripe also recently received grant funding from IBM to support its mission and initiative.

?MAC6 believed in our vision and passion to give back to a community that gives so much and continually impacts the entire world. Receiving funding at this stage validates our mission and propels us to do even greater things," said Eli Chmouni, co-founder and CEO of AlphaStripe.

The AlphaStripe platform is designed to allow users to document their military experiences and legacies in videos and photos. Earlier in the summer, the startup beta tested a variety of tools before redesigning the website to optimize the user experience.

"We invested in AlphaStripe because of what they are doing at a massive scale to improve the quality of life for the many past and current military members who have given so much to our country.? said Kyle McIntosh, co-founder and lead Creative Excitant at MAC6. ?We believe that the AlphaStripe team, with a for-profit approach to this business model, will create a platform that will help connect, share stories with, and change the world and how we view armed conflict, forever.?

The main areas of the AlphaStripe website are open to the public with secure areas available to veterans to allow private sharing of stories and the ability to reconnect with old comrades. The startup has developed an incredibly comprehensive military database for the US armed forces dating back to World War II, allowing veterans to connect based on their service history.

?I spent eight years in the US Army and there are so many stories to share. Some are too personal to share with the world. Some are so funny I have to share them with the world. AlphaStripe was created to share stories of conflict that so many soldiers understand only too well," said Jason Brown, Military Relations Officer and co-founder of AlphaStripe.

Brown served for 8 years in the United States Army. He was in the 4/25th Airborne Infantry out of Fort Richardson Alaska for the first portion of his service. During this time he deployed to Iraq for a 15 month rotation cut short by 4 months after sustaining a gunshot wound during a fire fight. After recovery, he deployed once more to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan.

MAC6 is an early stage business incubator that supports the growth of Conscious Capitalism business models in 10,000 square feet of state-of-the-art office space in Tempe. Additionally, MAC6 provides angel funding, an intensive mentorship program, and access to elite business community partners.

The MAC6 program advocates capitalism as a force for good and supports the growth of for-profit, early-stage companies with epic, paradigm-shifting ideas through creativity, collaboration, community and change. MAC6 is not industry exclusive and has set up a collaborative environment where many companies doing very different things are working side by side.

The ASU Venture Catalyst is a strategic unit of ASU?s Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development, the research arm of ASU. Eli Chmouni, co-founder and CEO of AlphaStripe, has been supported two years in a row through the ASU Edson student entrepreneur accelerator based in ASU SkySong, the Innovation Center in Scottsdale. The Edson accelerator provides funding, mentoring, and office space that enables students to advance their ventures and is part of the Venture Catalyst.

SpaceX founder Musk eyes 'self-sustaining' Mars civilization

In Musk's vision, the ambitious Mars settlement program would start with a pioneering group of fewer than 10 people, who would journey to the Red Planet aboard a huge reusable rocket powered by liquid oxygen and methane.

By Rob Coppinger,?SPACE.com / November 26, 2012

This still from a SpaceX mission concept video shows a Dragon space capsule landing on the surface of Mars. SpaceX's Dragon is a privately built space capsule to carry unmanned payloads, and eventually astronauts, into space.

Elon Musk, the billionaire founder and CEO of the private spaceflight company SpaceX, wants to help establish a Mars colony of up to 80,000 people by ferrying explorers to the Red Planet for perhaps $500,000 a trip.

In Musk's vision, the ambitious?Mars settlement?program would start with a pioneering group of fewer than 10 people, who would journey to the Red Planet aboard a huge reusable rocket powered by liquid oxygen and methane.

"At?Mars, you can start a self-sustaining civilization and grow it into something really big," Musk told an audience at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London on Friday (Nov. 16). Musk was there to talk about his business plans, and to receive the Society?s gold medal for his contribution to the commercialization of space.

Mars pioneers

Accompanying the founders of the new?Mars colony?would be large amounts of equipment, including machines to produce fertilizer, methane and oxygen from Mars? atmospheric nitrogen and carbon dioxide and the planet's subsurface water ice.

The Red Planet pioneers would also take construction materials to build transparent domes, which when pressurized with Mars? atmospheric CO2 could grow Earth crops in Martian soil. As the Mars colony became more self sufficient, the big rocket would start to transport more people and fewer supplies and equipment. [Future Visions of Human Spaceflight]

Musk?s architecture for this human Mars exploration effort does not employ cyclers, reusable spacecraft that would travel back and forth constantly between the Red Planet and Earth ? at least not at first

"Probably not a Mars cycler; the thing with the cyclers is, you need a lot of them," Musk told SPACE.com. "You have to have propellant to keep things aligned as [Mars and Earth?s] orbits aren?t [always] in the same plane. In the beginning you won?t have cyclers."

Musk also ruled out SpaceX's?Dragon capsule, which the company is developing to ferry astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit, as the spacecraft that would land colonists on the Red Planet. When asked by SPACE.com what vehicle would be used, he said, "I think you just land the entire thing."

Asked if the "entire thing" is the huge new?reusable rocket?? which is rumored to bear the acronymic name MCT, short for Mass Cargo Transport or Mars Colony Transport ? Musk said, "Maybe."

Musk has been thinking about what his colonist-carrying spacecraft would need, whatever it ends up being. He reckons the oxygen concentration inside should be 30 to 40 percent, and he envisions using the spacecraft?s liquid water store as a barrier between the Mars pioneers and the sun.

A $500,000 ticket

Musk?s $500,000 ticket price for a Mars trip was derived from what he thinks is affordable.

"The ticket price needs to be low enough that most people in advanced countries, in their mid-forties or something like that, could put together enough money to make the trip," he said, comparing the purchase to buying a house in California. [Photos: The First Space Tourists]

He also estimated that of the eight billion humans that will be living on Earth by the time the colony is possible, perhaps one in 100,000 would be prepared to go. That equates to potentially 80,000 migrants.

Musk figures the colony program ? which he wants to be a collaboration between government and private enterprise ? would end up costing about $36 billion. He arrived at that number by estimating that a colony that costs 0.25 percent or 0.5 percent of a nation?s gross domestic product (GDP) would be considered acceptable.

The United States' GDP in 2010 was $14.5 trillion; 0.25 percent of $14.5 trillion is $36 billion. If all 80,000 colonists paid $500,000 per seat for their Mars trip, $40 billion would be raised.

"Some money has to be spent on establishing a base on Mars. It?s about getting the basic fundamentals in place," Musk said. "That was true of the English colonies [in the Americas]; it took a significant expense to get things started. But once there are regular Mars flights, you can get the cost down to half a million dollars for someone to move to Mars. Then I think there are enough people who would buy that to have it be a reasonable business case."

The big reusable rocket

The fully reusable rocket that Musk wants to take colonists to Mars is an evolution of SpaceX's Falcon 9 booster, which launches Dragon.

"It?s going to be much bigger [than Falcon 9], but I don?t think we?re quite ready to state the payload. We?ll speak about that next year," Musk said, emphasizing that only fully reusable rockets and spacecraft would keep the ticket price for Mars migration as low as $500,000.

SpaceX is already testing what Musk calls a next-generation, reusable Falcon 9 rocket that can take off vertically and land vertically. The prototype,?called Grasshopper, is a Falcon 9 first stage with landing legs.

Grasshoper has made two short flights. The first was on Sept. 21 and reached a height of 6 feet (2 meters); the second test, on Nov. 1, was to a height of 17.7 feet (5.4 m). A planned milestone for the Grasshopper project is to reach an altitude of 100 feet (30 m). [Grasshopper Rocket's 2-Story Test Flight (Video)]

"Over the next few months, we?ll gradually increase the altitude and speed," Musk said. "I do think there probably will be some craters along the way; we?ll be very lucky if there are no craters. Vertical landing is an extremely important breakthrough ? extreme, rapid reusability. It?s as close to aircraft-like dispatch capability as one can achieve."

Musk wants to have a reusable Falcon 9 first stage, which uses Grasshopper technology, come back from orbit in "the next year or two." He then wants to use this vertical-landing technology for Falcon 9?s upper stage.

Musk hopes to have a fully reusable version of Falcon 9 in five or six years, but he acknowledged that those could be "famous last words."

A rocket stepping stone

Another?stepping stone toward the planned reusable Mars rocket is SpaceX?s?Falcon Heavy launcher. With a first flight planned for next year from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, the Heavy is a Falcon 9 that has two Falcon 9 first stages bolted on either side.

Musk expects the Falcon Heavy to launch from Florida's Cape Canaveral eventually. This triple-first-stage rocket will be able to put 116,600 pounds (53,000 kilograms) into a 124-mile (200 kilometers) low-Earth orbit. But the Falcon Heavy is still much smaller than Musk?s fully reusable Mars rocket, which will also employ a new engine.

While Musk declines to state what the Mars rocket?s payload capability will be, he does say it will use a new staged combustion cycle engine called Raptor. The cycle involves two steps. Propellant ? the fuel and oxidizer ? is ignited in pre-burners to produce hot high-pressure gases that help pump propellant into the engine?s combustion chamber. The hot gases are then directed into the same chamber to aid in the combustion of the propellants.

Because Raptor is a staged combustion engine ? like the main engines of NASA's now-retired?space shuttle fleet?? it is expected to be far more efficient than the open-cycle Merlin engines used by the Falcon 9.

While the Falcon 9?s engines use liquid oxygen (LOX) and kerosene, Raptor will use LOX and methane. Musk explained that "the energy cost of methane is the lowest, and it has a slight ISP [specific impulse] advantage over kerosene and doesn?t have any of the bad aspects of hydrogen." (Hydrogen is difficult to store at cryogenic temperatures, makes metal brittle and is very flammable.)

Oppo BDP-103

If you want to put a lot of effort into your home theater, you need to be prepared to spend some money. While you can get a perfectly fine, high-quality Blu-ray player like the Editors' Choice LG BP620 for a relatively low price, it won't necessarily integrate well with your high-end, AV receiver-equipped, HDTV-and-projector custom installation. For a Blu-ray player worthy of a private theater, you need to step up and get ready to cut a hefty check. Last year, we reviewed the Oppo BDP-93 and were impressed enough to give the massive, expensive Blu-ray player our Editors' Choice. Oppo has since replaced it with the BDP-103; this $499 (direct) player edges out its predecessor with new features while delivering the same great performance and build quality, making it our new top pick for high-end Blu-ray players.

Sturdy, Thoughtful Design
At 3.1 by 16.8 by 12.2 inches (HWD) and 10.8 pounds, the BDP-103 is a beast compared with lower-end Blu-ray players, but slightly slimmer and lighter than the BDP-93. The chassis is constructed of sturdy metal, with a brushed black finish. The front is flat and sleek, covered by a handful of scattered, round buttons including Power, Eject, and playback controls. The drive tray sits in a plastic rectangle in the center of the faceplate, flanked by an informative LED display on the left and an eject button on the right. The display shows the source of the content you're viewing, like Network for DLNA media, and even shows the status of your firmware downloads when you update the system. It's a small detail, but one not often seen.

A USB port and HDMI input with MHL sit just below the display and tray rectangle. The back of the player is loaded with connections, including two HDMI outputs, 7.1-channel analog audio outputs, two USB ports, optical audio, coaxial audio, Ethernet, HDMI input, infrared blaster, and RS-232C for integrating the player with a control system. At least one of the USB ports will likely be occupied by the included Wi-Fi adapter, which has a USB extension for placing the adapter itself in a more reception-friendly location if the player is in an awkward place.

The remote is thick, sturdy, and backlit, with a reasonably sensible button layout. Dedicated Netflix and Vudu buttons let you access online services, and the control pad is round and easy to find blindly. The only problem is the Home button, which sits next to the number pad and feels identical to nearly every button on that part of the remote. Since that's the main way to access the player's home menu, it's easy to fumble when you're getting used to the remote. You can also use a free Android app to control the player from your smartphone or tablet, and an iOS version of the app is planned.

Features Galore
As expected given the price, the BDP-103 is loaded with features. It can play SACD and DVD-Audio discs, along with a host of video and audio file formats, including lossless and FLAC. It can play 3D Blu-ray discs and convert 2D video content into 3D (even if that conversion is always inferior to a native 3D source). It can even upscale to 4K resolution, so if you're one of the very few who have the as-yet-unavailable-to-consumers next generation of high definition displays, you're covered. You also get access to a? wide selection of online services, including Netflix, Vudu, Pandora, YouTube, Film Fresh, and Picasa. For cinephiles, a source video mode lets you output video to a video processor without performing any processing itself, and a vertical stretch mode fits movies to a 2.35:1 anamorphic display.

Oppo BDP-103 Back

Performance
Blazingly fast, the BDP-103 loaded Black Swan, a feature-rich Blu-ray with BD-Live, in an average of 23.2 seconds, edging out the BDP-93 by 2.2 seconds. It beats out the load speeds of the midrange Editors' Choice LG BP620 by solid 3.8 seconds. It isn't a massive leap in speed from lower-end Blu-ray players, but it's certainly a bit faster by a few seconds compared to most. The only player that edges it out is the Panasonic DMP-BDT220's? ability to load The Sound of Music 25th?Anniversary Edition in just 22.3 seconds, and that's too close to notice much of a difference. The BDP-103 also offers connectivity and video-processing features that BDT220 doesn't touch.

We test Blu-ray video processing with the HQV Blu-ray benchmark disc, and the BDP-103 passed all tests with flying colors. It handled both 30fps video and 24fps film footage easily, and horizontal motion showed a minimum of tearing. Image processing artifacts were nearly nonexistent, and noise was slightly smoothed out without hurting detail.

The Oppo BDP-103 is just like its predecessor: big, expensive, and, well, excellent. It adds 2D-to-3D conversion, 4K upscaling, MHL HDMI inputs, and a handful of other features to an already top-notch high-end Blu-ray player that can handle any format you throw at it. It's pricey at $500, but if you want a player that can do everything and really complement your complicated home theater system, this is the one to beat, replacing the BDP-93 as our Editors' Choice for high-end Blu-ray players. If you don't have a huge, expensive HDTV and sound system and can't justify spending that much on a Blu-ray player, the LG BP620 is still quite a full-featured player. The BP620 doesn't have the custom home theater bells and whistles of the BDP-103, but is available for just $150 and remains our favorite midrange choice.

10 Tips to Help You Find the Right Boarding Facility For Your Horse ...

Choosing the right boarding facility for your horse is almost as complicated as choosing your own accommodations. Care, thought and research has to be put into the matter because your horse,s life and well being depends on the choices you make. Here are a few tips to help simplify the matter for you:

1. The Facility: Take a good look at the facility. Ask to see the stables, the tack room, the paddocks and any other areas around the facility. The facility should be clean, airy and not smell of manure or ammonia. The stables should be light and airy and away from any drafts.

2. The Managers: Talk to the owners or manager. They should appear knowledgeable and helpful and ask if any staff members remain overnight to monitor the horses.

3. Training: Find out if the facility offers any training for you or your horse. Professional training services can be very beneficial if your horse is green or has any vices.

4. The Horses: Take a look at the horses. Are they calm and clean? Horses can tell a lot about how they feel about their environment by the way they behave. Do they have proper bedding under them? Are the stables clean? Try to talk to other owners and ask them about their opinion of the facility.

5. Turnout Times: Find out about the facilities turnout routine. Horses need to spend time out in a paddock, this is important for their mental and physical wellbeing.

6. Additional Services: Ask about extra services such as veterinary care, shoeing, de-worming and vaccinations. Ask about the vet the facility uses and how they handle emergencies.

7. Location: The location of the facility is very important. Is it close to where you live? Is it easily accessible? Is it close to urban areas? 8. Opening Hours: Find out when the facility is open and decide whether their operating hours are convenient for you.

9. Costs and Contracts: Ask about monthly expenses and costs and read any contracts closely. Some facilities may seem cheaper than others but may have hidden fees, so make sure you read the contract properly and don?t be afraid to ask if there?s something you don?t understand.

10. Arenas and Riding Areas: A good choice of facility will include an indoor and outdoor riding area. If you choose a stable that is too close to the city, you may discover that hacking areas are limited.

Make sure you do your homework properly, research and try to get word of mouth recommendations from family and friends, use online resources to help find reputable stables on the internet.
