Red Bulls blow out Toronto FC

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:07 p.m. ET Sept. 29, 2012

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - Kenny Cooper broke out of a bit of a scoring drought, scoring his first two goals since Aug. 19, but the New York Red Bulls striker didn't want to talk about himself. The attention belonged to talented teammate Thierry Henry.

Henry scored a goal and set up three others to lead the Red Bulls to a 4-1 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday night, solidifying their chances to earn an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"I think he has eyes on the side of his head, the back of his head, all over," Cooper said. "His vision is unbelievable and I don't know how he's able to find me so easily."

Markus Holgersson also scored for the Red Bulls (15-8-8), who pulled even with Chicago for second place in the East - five points behind Sporting Kansas City - and improved to 11-1-3 at home.

So how impressive were Henry's assists?

"I think I could have scored on the two that Kenny got," Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe said. "He was phenomenal. He was flying through the first 45 minutes and set up every goal except his own. It's one of the best games he's had since he's been here. He was incredible with the ball. When he plays like this, when he shines like this, you could say he's the best player in the league."

Luis Robles, making his debut in goal for the Red Bulls, replacing the injured Bill Gaudette, made four saves to earn his first MLS victory.

Ryan Johnson scored in the 6th minute to give Toronto FC (5-19-7) an early lead.

The Red Bulls scored twice in a 14-minute span of the first half to take the lead. Henry hit a perfect corner kick in the 13th minute to the box, where Holgersson headed it home for the equalizer.

"He creates chances from all over," said Holgersson, who scored his third goal of the season. "It's awesome to watch when I'm in the back, but it's better when he's getting it to me to score. The ball came perfectly to me and it was an easy goal. He's amazing. He's just a fantastic player."

In the 27th minute, Henry's pretty heel pass set up Cooper for the go-ahead score.

Henry then made the play to set up the next score, drawing the defenders to him, then finding Cooper in front in the 88th minute. It gave Cooper 16 goals on the season, second in MLS behind San Jose's Chris Wondolowski.

"It's a privilege to have him play alongside of me," Cooper said. "It might have been more difficult for me to miss than to put those two in. He's an exceptional world class player."

Henry now has 12 assists for the season, and he became the first player in franchise history to get three in a match since Andy Williams did it on June 5, 2002, for the MetroStars against Los Angeles. Henry capped the night with his 14th goal from 25 yards out in stoppage time with Cooper getting the assist.

Toronto FC coach Paul Mariner thought that the team's travel - from Toronto to El Salvador for a CONCACAF Champions League contest, then Los Angeles and finally New York - did them in.

"It was a difficult travel week," Mariner said. "We just can't catch a break and it could be that they have quality players. It's probably more of the latter. He (Henry) was dominant on both sides of the ball."

Toronto had an opportunity to take a lead in the very first minute. Quincy Amarikwa broke free on the left flank and took a left-footed shot that eluded Robles but hit the right post.

Five minutes later, Toronto FC was the first to get on the scoreboard, when Johnson scored from 40 yards out that curled into far high left corner of the net, a shot that a stunned Robles never had a chance to stop.

In the 13th minute, Henry took a corner kick that was perfectly placed into the box. Defender Holgersson emerged from the pack in front and re-directed the cross with his head for his third goal of the season to tie the score 1-1.

The Red Bulls had another great chance to score in the 19th minute, when Cooper's left-footed blast was pushed aside by Toronto goalkeeper Freddy Hall.

The Red Bulls scored in the 27th minute when midfielder Lloyd Sam, getting his first MLS start, made a brilliant move with the ball and pushed it ahead to Henry. The Red Bulls' captain then touched the ball with his heel to Cooper, left all alone in front of the net. Cooper converted the easy goal. Cooper later added his 16th goal of the year, moving six behind Wondolowski.

Sam and Henry were masterful throughout the first half with their ball handling, leaving Toronto's defenders befuddled and unable to defend them.

"It was probably the best we've handled the ball all year," Backe said.

Sam had at least three sensational moves with the ball, leading to solid crosses and scoring chances. Sam also made an unbelievable 85-yard run from box-to-box to make a sliding tackle and take away a scoring opportunity in the 50th minute. Sam left in the 58th minute with an injury, replaced by Jan Gunnar Solli.

UK: 'Domineering' men face domestic violence prosecutions ...

Article here. Excerpt:

'The move will mean that domineering men who torment their partners but do not assault them physically can be brought to justice for the first time.

Verbal insults, taking control of a spouse?s finances or isolating them from family and friends could all count as domestic abuse under the new definition.

Under-18s will also face prosecution for the crime, following concerns about the number of abusive teenage relationships.

However it will not mean the creation of a new criminal offence of domestic violence. Instead, bullying husbands could face trial if it was thought that their behaviour amounted to harassment.

The changes were first proposed last year and will be confirmed by Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat leader, on Wednesday.
...
The definition will be widened to anyone aged 16 or over, and may even refer to perpetrators who are related to their victims, in order to cover so-called ?honour? attacks and forced marriage.

Although most victims of domestic abuse are female, the revised wording will make it clear that the law will apply to anyone ?regardless of gender or sexuality?.'

"Gospel of Jesus' wife" fragment is a fake, Vatican says

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - An ancient papyrus fragment which a Harvard scholar says contains the first recorded mention that Jesus may have had a wife is a fake, the Vatican said on Friday.

"Substantial reasons would lead one to conclude that the papyrus is indeed a clumsy forgery," the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, said in an editorial by its editor, Gian Maria Vian. "In any case, it's a fake."

Joining a highly charged academic debate over the authenticity of the text, written in ancient Egyptian Coptic, the newspaper published a lengthy analysis by expert Alberto Camplani of Rome's La Sapienza university, outlining doubts about the manuscript and urging extreme caution.

The fragment, which reads "Jesus said to them, my wife" was unveiled by Harvard Professor Karen King as a text from the 4th century at a congress of Coptic Studies in Rome last week.

Her study divided the academic community, with some hailing it as a landmark discovery while others rapidly expressed their doubts .

"It's really pretty unlikely that it's authentic," University of Durham Professor Francis Watson told Reuters after he published a paper arguing the words on the fragment were a rearrangement of phrases from a well known Coptic text.

Watson, who has previously worked on identifying forged gospels, said it was likely to be an ancient blank fragment that was written over in the 20th or 21st century by a forger seeking to make money.

Watson argues the words on the fragment do not fit grammatically into a larger text.

"It's possible to get hold of an old bit of un-written on papyrus and write some new stuff on it," Watson said. "There is a market for fake antiquities throughout the Middle East ... I would guess that in this case the motivation might have been a financial one."

ACADEMIC DEBATE

Manuscript experts who heard King's presentation quickly took to their blogs to express doubts, noting that the letters were clumsy, perhaps the script of someone unused to writing Coptic.

Writing from the conference, early Christian scholar Christian Askeland said specialists there were divided between two-thirds who were extremely skeptical, and one-third convinced the fragment was false.

"I have not met anyone who supports its authenticity," Askeland wrote from a session of the Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies, where King gave her paper.

In an email to Reuters after the conference ended and before the Vatican editorial, King said: "Whether, in the end, the fragment will be shown to be authentic is still to be finally determined, but the serious conversation among scholars has begun."

During the conference King stressed that the fragment did not give "any evidence that Jesus was married, or not married" but that early Christians were talking about the possibility.

AnneMarie Luijendijk, associate professor of religion at Princeton University, said she concluded that the fragment was indeed an authentic, ancient text, written by a scribe in antiquity.

"We can see that by the way the ink is preserved on the papyrus and also the way the papyrus has faded and also the way the papyrus has become very fragmentary, which is actually in line with a lot of other papyri we have also from the New Testament," Luijendijk told Reuters during the conference.

The idea that Jesus was married resurfaces regularly in popular culture, notably with the 2003 publication of Dan Brown's best-seller "The Da Vinci Code," which angered the Vatican because, among other things, it was based on the idea that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and had children.

Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married and the Catholic Church, by far the largest in Christendom, says women cannot become priests because Christ chose only men as his apostles.

Iraqi convicts riot, escape from prison; 12 killed

(AP) ? Prisoners seized weapons and set off hours-long clashes with security guards at a prison in Saddam Hussein's hometown that left 12 dead, including 10 guards, before dozens of inmates managed to escape from the facility, Iraqi officials said Friday.

Many of those who escaped from the prison in Tikrit, 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, were al-Qaida suspects, said a provincial spokesman but he could not say whether the terror group was behind the prison break.

The violence erupted on Thursday night, said Mohammed al-Assi, the spokesman for Salahuddin province where Tikrit is located. Several inmates broke into the prison storeroom and grabbed weapons kept there, overpowering the guards, he said.

The prisoners then engaged in an hours-long gun battle with the security troops inside the facility before breaking out of the prison on Friday morning. Security troops later regained control of the prison, al-Assi said.

Following the prison break, a curfew was imposed in Tikrit, he added.

"Everything is under control now. Our security forces are chasing the escaped prisoners and have already recaptured some," al-Assi told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

A provincial health official, Raed Ibrahim, confirmed that 12 people died in the violence ? 10 prison guards and two inmates. He said 32 people were wounded in the clashes.

Qutaiba al-Jubouri, a lawmaker from the province, said a total of 81 inmates, including some who had been sentenced to death, managed to escape but that 36 of them were quickly recaptured.

"This is a regrettable security breach," said al-Jubouri, adding that an investigation will follow, "starting with the commanders of the security forces" at the prison.

He added that special forces were sent to Tikrit from Baghdad in order to put down the rioting.

Another lawmaker, Hakim al-Zamili, said the inmates burned all the prison records, which will complicate efforts to track down those who escaped.

Prison breaks are common in Iraq and are a big embarrassment to the country's Shiite-led government.

Warning signs seen before actor's violent end

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An attorney said Friday he believes a drug-induced psychosis was responsible for an outburst by an actor that police say ended in the slaying of his landlady before the former "Sons of Anarchy" cast member plunged to his death.

Johnny Lewis, 28, had been arrested three times during the past year and officials were concerned about his mental health and the danger he posed to others. His lawyer Jonathan Mandel, who represented Lewis in the criminal cases, said drugs may have been a factor in the actor's final hours.

"He probably had gotten into marijuana or some medication and that caused him to snap," Mandel said. "If you take certain drugs it triggers that psychosis. A lot of people don't come back."

Authorities said they were still searching for a motive behind the strangulation death of 81-year-old Catherine Davis.

Authorities found Davis and Lewis dead Wednesday after neighbors reported a woman screaming inside her home that had been ransacked, and where glass was shattered and a dead cat was found. Neighbors said a man jumped a fence and attacked a painter and homeowner next door.

Investigators are awaiting toxicology tests for Lewis to determine whether he had drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of his death.

"(Lewis) being under the influence is something we are looking at based on his behavior and based on what people have told us about his past," said police Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

The body of Lewis, who played Kip "Half-Sack" Epps on the TV drama "Sons of Anarchy," was found in a driveway, and he could have jumped or fallen from the roof, garage or balcony, or tumbled down stairs from a patio area, Smith said. Police said Lewis is the only suspect in the death of Davis.

Probation officials earlier this year expressed concern about Lewis' mental health. The report was prepared in a case in which Lewis was accused of attempting to break into the home of a woman. That case came about six weeks after Lewis hit two men over the head with a Perrier bottle during a fight.

The probation official wrote of being "very concerned for the well-being of not only the community but that of the defendant."

The report added Lewis suffered from some form of chemical dependency and mental health issue, and was a transient.

"Given this, (Lewis) will continue to be a threat to any community he may reside," it said

Lewis was released from Los Angeles County Jail a week ago, according to court records. He had pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon and attempted burglary in separate cases, documents show.

Lewis was earning about $20,000 a year as an actor and he had been living with his parents when he was first arrested in January. Two probation reports note that Lewis was ordered to stay away from drugs.

Mandel, the attorney, said no drugs were involved in the prior assault and attempted burglary cases. While Mandel knew Lewis had recent, serious mental health issues, he was stunned to learn what had happened.

"I thought the worst that would happen to him would be something dumb like walking on someone's property," Mandel said. "What is alleged of him is so out of the ordinary for him. No one could have envisioned that."

Lewis had been a Scientologist but dropped out in his early 20s, Mandel said. The move could have caused some friction between Lewis and some of his family, who also were Scientologists, although they had been trying to help him out with his troubled, Mandel said.

Mandel said he recommended treatment for Lewis but he declined it.

"I don't think he acknowledged he struggled with drugs," he said. "He felt that he was fine. I know he self-treated, but I don't know if he was an addict. It's certainly a possibility."

Lewis' career spanned more than a decade, mainly in small roles. Among his credits were "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator ? Requiem," two seasons on TV's "The O.C." and "Malcolm in the Middle." He was on "Sons of Anarchy" in 2008 and 2009 before his character was killed off.

Bioengineers introduce 'Bi-Fi' -- The biological 'Internet'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? If you were a bacterium, the virus M13 might seem innocuous enough. It insinuates more than it invades, setting up shop like a freeloading houseguest, not a killer. Once inside it makes itself at home, eating your food, texting indiscriminately. Recently, however, bioengineers at Stanford University have given M13 a bit of a makeover.

The researchers, Monica Ortiz, a doctoral candidate in bioengineering, and Drew Endy, PhD, an assistant professor of bioengineering, have parasitized the parasite and harnessed M13's key attributes -- its non-lethality and its ability to package and broadcast arbitrary DNA strands -- to create what might be termed the biological Internet, or "Bi-Fi." Their findings were published online Sept. 7 in the Journal of Biological Engineering.

Using the virus, Ortiz and Endy have created a biological mechanism to send genetic messages from cell to cell. The system greatly increases the complexity and amount of data that can be communicated between cells and could lead to greater control of biological functions within cell communities. The advance could prove a boon to bioengineers looking to create complex, multicellular communities that work in concert to accomplish important biological functions.

Medium and message

M13 is a packager of genetic messages. It reproduces within its host, taking strands of DNA -- strands that engineers can control -- wrapping them up one by one and sending them out encapsulated within proteins produced by M13 that can infect other cells. Once inside the new hosts, they release the packaged DNA message.

The M13-based system is essentially a communication channel. It acts like a wireless Internet connection that enables cells to send or receive messages, but it does not care what secrets the transmitted messages contain.

"Effectively, we've separated the message from the channel. We can now send any DNA message we want to specific cells within a complex microbial community," said Ortiz, the first author of the study.

It is well-known that cells naturally use various mechanisms, including chemicals, to communicate, but such messaging can be extremely limited in both complexity and bandwidth. Simple chemical signals are typically both message and messenger -- two functions that cannot be separated.

"If your network connection is based on sugar then your messages are limited to 'more sugar,' 'less sugar,' or 'no sugar'" explained Endy.

Cells engineered with M13 can be programmed to communicate in much more complex, powerful ways than ever before. The possible messages are limited only by what can be encoded in DNA and thus can include any sort of genetic instruction: start growing, stop growing, come closer, swim away, produce insulin and so forth.

Rates and ranges

In harnessing DNA for cell-cell messaging the researchers have also greatly increased the amount of data they can transmit at any one time. In digital terms, they have increased the bit rate of their system. The largest DNA strand M13 is known to have packaged includes more than 40,000 base pairs. Base pairs, like 1s and 0s in digital encoding, are the basic building blocks of genetic data. Most genetic messages of interest in bioengineering range from several hundred to many thousand base pairs.

Ortiz was even able to broadcast her genetic messages between cells separated by a gelatinous medium at a distance of greater than 7 centimeters.

"That's very long-range communication, cellularly speaking," she said.

Down the road, the biological Internet could lead to biosynthetic factories in which huge masses of microbes collaborate to make more complicated fuels, pharmaceuticals and other useful chemicals. With improvements, the engineers say, their cell-cell communication platform might someday allow more complex three-dimensional programming of cellular systems, including the regeneration of tissue or organs.

"The ability to communicate 'arbitrary' messages is a fundamental leap -- from just a signal-and-response relationship to a true language of interaction," said Radhika Nagpal, professor of computer science at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, who was not involved in the research. "Orchestrating the cooperation of cells to form artificial tissues, or even artificial organisms is just one possibility. This opens a door to new biological systems and solving problems that have no direct analog in nature."

Ortiz added: "The biological Internet is in its very earliest stages. When the information Internet was first introduced in the 1970s, it would have been hard to imagine the myriad uses it sees today, so there's no telling all the places this new work might lead."

'HabCam' opens window to seafloor life

The oceans are getting the red-carpet treatment with a new project from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: HabCam, an optical imaging endeavor that provides researchers with a one-of-a-kind glimpse of the seafloor.

The "Cam" part of HabCam is a camera system that is towed over the ocean bottom along the continental shelf (where a continent drops off under the ocean) off the East Coast of the United States. The system snaps six images per second ? that's a half-million images a day; then, a process corrects the color and an algorithm stitches the pictures together to create a giant panorama of the seafloor. Each day, HabCam can capture 100 nautical miles (185 kilometers) of ocean floor.

Amber York, a biology research associate at Woods Hole who works on HabCam, told OurAmazingPlanet that pictures have already sparked her interest: She has spotted an anemone and a worm that could be new species.

"As a biologist, I think what excites me more than anything about this project is the ability to see these organisms in a large scale in their natural habitat," York said. "A lot of these off-shore species are not as well-documented as the coastal ones on the beach. It's intense detective work trying to identify them." [ HabCam Images: Peek Beneath the Waves ]

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Take 360-degree tours of the Great Barrier Reef

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Thousands of images from Australia's Great Barrier Reef and other coral locales are being stitched together into an eye-popping array of 360-degree panoramas ? but this project isn't just about pretty pictures.

    2. Vampire squid sucks up garbage, not blood
    3. A clock to keep time after universe dies
    4. Is the uncertainty principle misunderstood?

Zigzagging over the seafloor
HabCam's 2-megapixel camera is towed on a large metal skeleton by a 103-foot (31 meters) sea scallop trawler, above coastal regions of the Northeast, including Georges Bank, the Mid-Atlantic Bight and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. To collect the photos, HabCam is towed from a ship and travels in patterns from zigzags to spirals through the ocean about 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 m) above the seafloor, collecting more than 40 million images in total. The newest version of the system also includes a side scan acoustics system that gathers information on seafloor roughness ? something that is difficult to see with the photos alone.

The pictures also give scientists a window into how marine life on the seafloor acts. In the past, biologists have used giant trawlers to scoop up critters and dump them on the deck of ships for analysis. The problem, York said, is that the creatures look different when they come up than they do in their natural habitat.

"They may change their color as they come up, or they get broken up too much in the process," she said.

HabCam also gives a peek into the way the creatures live on the floor. For example, sea stars were thought to be relatively spread out, but York has noticed that they tend to gather in armies ? she calls them hordes ? and eat everything in their path as they move across a scallop field.

Counting scallops and sea stars
The camera is helping scientists count scallops on the seafloor, and helping them understand the health of the ecosystem. Right now, it's being used to count scallops in a way that is much more rigorous than previous methods. They want to create a quantifiable marker for the habitat, including factors such as species richness, diversity, the composition of the material the creatures live on and ecosystem change through time and over different areas. HabCam will help create a historical baseline for the seafloor health to be evaluated in the future.

Of course, it's a lot of work sifting through all those images. To help, those running HabCam have reached out to the Citizen Science Alliance and launched an interactive website called "Seafloor Explorer," where people can help identify scallops, sea stars and other creatures in the pictures. The project is starting with 100,000 images to annotate.

"We are interested in finding out what is happening to the seafloor over time, but we also need help in identifying individuals in all the photos," York said. The research group is working on a system to train computers to classify the images, but first they need people power to interpret what they're seeing.

York is positively pumped over the future of the field.

"I think this is just the start of a whole field of research ? imaging of marine life on the seafloor," she said.

Candidates make subtle jabs on foreign policy

(AP) ? The presidential candidates on Tuesday laid out their visions of America's role in the world while making subtle political jabs at one another in dueling foreign policy speeches shaped by violent protests in the Middle East and their closely fought campaign at home.

Republican nominee Mitt Romney smiled and joked with political foe Bill Clinton before delivering a speech that insinuated that President Barack Obama has not done enough to shape chaos overseas.

A couple miles away in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Obama indirectly referenced Romney's statement, revealed last week in a secretly recorded video at a private fundraiser, that he doesn't have much faith in peace prospects between Israelis and Palestinians.

Obama didn't mention the video but told the assembled world leaders: "Among Israelis and Palestinians, the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on the prospect of peace."

Like Obama, Romney avoided direct criticism he's made during recent campaign appearances to reflect the setting at the gathering of political, humanitarian and business leaders at the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative. The GOP White House nominee said U.S. aid needs to be more effective in elevating people and bringing about lasting change in developing nations plagued by instability and violence, including the death of the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

In his remarks, Romney called the death a terrorist attack, language that Obama himself has not used but that his chief spokesman and secretary of state have. Obama told the United Nations that the violence in Libya "were attacks on America" and called on world leaders to help confront the root causes of rage across the Muslim world.

"We somehow feel that we are at the mercy of events, rather than shaping events," Romney said.

Romney said he would negotiate trade agreements and offer "prosperity pacts" in the Middle East and other developing nations to encourage open markets in exchange for U.S. aid. "The aim of a much larger share of our aid must be the promotion of work and the fostering of free enterprise," Romney said.

In a reflection of his policy on welfare in the United States, Romney said work is the key to lifting people out of poverty abroad by providing self-esteem and a grounding in reality instead of fanaticism. That message also was designed to appeal to white, working-class voters, who Obama has been targeting by sending Clinton out to campaign for him.

Clinton gave Romney a warm introduction, which led Romney to jokingly acknowledge that the former president is helping his rival.

"If there's one thing we've learned this election season, it's that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good," Romney said. "All I've got to do now is wait a couple days for that bounce to happen."

New polling in key swing states indicates that Obama may indeed be experiencing a bounce since the Democratic National Convention, where Clinton offered a passionate defense of Obama's economic record and said Romney "fails the test of fiscal responsibility," among other criticisms of the Republican.

Washington Post polls out Tuesday show Obama leading Romney in Ohio, 52 to 44 percent, among likely voters. Romney planned to join running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio for campaign events later Tuesday and Wednesday.

The president also had a slight edge in Florida, 51 to 47 percent among those most likely to vote, according to the Post polling. Obama fared much better among all registered Florida voters, with a lead of 9 percentage points, suggesting the president's campaign will need to focus on getting the maximum number of voters to the polls.

Obama appeared at Clinton's gathering later in the day and announced new initiatives against human trafficking in the United States and overseas. The president, who said he keeps a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation in the Oval Office, called the practice nothing more than "modern slavery" and said new teams are dismantling human traffickers.

"We're putting them where they belong: behind bars," Obama said.

Earlier, at the same podium, Romney tweaked an anecdote that got him in trouble in Israel this summer when he told Jewish donors their culture is part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the Palestinians, outraging Palestinian leaders who suggested the comments were racist.

This time, Romney said the most successful countries encourage free enterprise and protect the rights of individuals while enforcing the rule of law, replacing the word culture with the word freedom. "Economic freedom is the only force in history that has consistently lifted people out of poverty," Romney said.

After the Clinton meeting, Romney discussed education policy at the New York Public Library in a forum sponsored by NBC News. Romney said he would not prevent teachers from being able to strike, but would like to see parents exert more influence over their children's educations than teachers unions. He repeatedly praised Education Secretary Arne Duncan, citing his focus on school choice and teacher competency, but declined to say whether he'd keep him in his Cabinet.

GOP Cites Romneys' Charity

Republicans Sunday highlighted the significant charitable giving disclosed in Mitt Romney's 2011 tax return, seeking to change the focus of a debate that has centered on the candidate's wealth and relatively low tax rate.

The 2011 federal tax return released by the Romneys on Friday showed they donated about $4 million to charity, nearly 30% of their $13.7 million in income. The Romneys also produced a letter from accountants at PricewaterhouseCoopers stating they gave away an average of more than 13% of their income each year between 1990 and 2009.

"The Romneys have been successful, but they also have been ...

Mexico's Ferrari urges U.S. not to tear up tomato pact

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Commerce Department should renegotiate a 16-year-old tomato trade agreement with Mexico rather than give in to election-year demands from Florida growers to tear up the pact, Mexico's Economy Minister Bruno Ferrari said on Monday.

Under the agreement, Washington suspended anti-dumping action against Mexico in 1996 and negotiated a minimum price at which Mexican tomatoes can be sold in the United States.

Florida tomato growers complain the agreement fails to protect them against Mexican tomatoes sold below the cost of production. Ditching the agreement would allow Florida producers to file a new anti-dumping complaint. That alarms Mexican growers, who prefer the stability of the pact.

"We believe the suspension agreement has worked well for 16 years. It has been good for the industries and for U.S. consumers as well," Ferrari told Reuters in an interview.

Preserving the tomato agreement is important for Mexico, which currently exports close to $1.9 billion worth of tomatoes to the United States, Ferrari said.

It is "obvious" the Florida Tomato Exchange timed its request to put political pressure on the White House ahead of the November 6 presidential election, he said.

If the United States makes a hasty decision, instead of conducting a standard 270-day review, "Mexico will use all our legal means to defend our producers," Ferrari said.

Florida is one of several "battleground" states expected to determine the outcome of the U.S. presidential election.

A number of Florida politicians up for re-election, including Senator Bill Nelson, Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz and 15 other members of the state's congressional delegation, have sent letters pressing senior Commerce Department officials to quickly terminate the agreement.

HISTORIC COMPETITION

Florida is the second-largest U.S. producer of tomatoes behind California. U.S. production of both fresh and processing tomatoes totals about $2 billion annually.

Mexico accounts for about 71 percent of the U.S. import market for greenhouse tomatoes. Mexico and Florida historically compete for the U.S. winter and early spring market.

Ferrari said the Commerce Department should take Mexico growers up on their offer to renegotiate the pact.

This "would have the least impact on trade between the two countries and also on U.S. consumers," Ferrari said. "You have to keep in consideration that one of every two tomatoes that people consume here comes from Mexico."

Lawyers for the Mexican industry argue the department can't terminate the pact without first determining Florida growers have the support of at least 85 percent of the U.S. tomato industry and without conducting a 270-day review.

Since much of Mexico's produce is imported into the United States through Nogales, Arizona, a number of that state's politicians have weighed in on Mexico's side.

Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl and other Arizona lawmakers sent a letter last week to Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank stressing that "any rush to prematurely decide this issue before the November elections should be avoided."

The Florida group says it has the support of at least 90 percent of the U.S. industry based on official U.S. Agriculture Department production, but Ferrari said he doubts that claim.

"As a matter of fact, I don't believe they even have half of the support of the industry," Ferrari said. (Reporting by Doug Palmer; Editing by Andrew Hay, Phil Berlowitz and Bernard Orr)

(AP) ? As Kansas City kicker Ryan Succop lined up for a 31-yard field goal in overtime, fans started filing out of the Superdome.

Those who stuck around looked on in dread as New Orleans' nightmare of an offseason continued to bleed into the regular season.

Succop drilled his club-record sixth field goal of the game, punctuating an 18-point comeback that made the Chiefs 27-24 upset road winners on Sunday.

The Saints fell to 0-3 since head coach Sean Payton was suspended for a season in the NFL's bounty probe ? a stark reversal of fortune for a team that made the playoffs each of the past three years.

"We don't know how we're supposed to act right now," interim head coach Aaron Kromer said of being winless through Week 3. "We had a chance today. We're getting close, but close is not good enough."

Still, Drew Brees described the Saints as a team that won't quit.

"In a lot of situations there's probably teams that will just ... notch up the season as a loss and just kind of go about their day with no purpose. We have purpose," Brees said. "We believe. We also know that whatever we're facing right now is strengthening us, is molding us into the team that we're going to be. We're running out of time here, so we need to pull it together."

The Saints have now lost twice in the Superdome, where they were unbeaten a season ago. While their losses have come by 8 points or fewer, they have also come against three teams that are now 1-2.

Next week, the Saints travel to Green Bay.

The Chiefs (1-2), meanwhile, went home feeling a lot better about not only getting their first victory, but the resolve they showed in erasing the 24-6 deficit they faced in the third quarter.

"The best part is our guys never gave up," said Succop, a perfect 6 for 6 on kicks ranging from 25 to 45 yards, including one from 43 that tied it with 3 seconds left in regulation. "We kept fighting, it was a huge team win and I'm just really excited to have had a part in it."

Jamaal Charles' 91-yard touchdown run ? the longest running play in Chiefs history, and the longest given up by the Saints ? started Kansas City's comeback. Then the Chiefs' defense thwarted a Saints scoring chance when Stanford Routt intercepted Brees' underthrown pass for Devery Henderson near the Kansas City goal line late in the third quarter.

Brees was 20 of 36 for 240 yards and three TDs to Lance Moore, Jimmy Graham and Jed Collins. But he did not complete a pass after the third quarter, and the Saints never got another first down.

Some of Brees' difficulty stemmed from constant pressure from end Justin Houston, who beat right tackle Zach Strief for three sacks, including a safety in the fourth quarter.

"It was all around not good enough by me," Strief said. "I was physically and mentally beat, and that's disappointing."

Charles, who finished with 233 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving, scored the only touchdown the Chiefs needed, with Succop and Houston's safety accounting for 20 points.

"This team needed a win, and a win like that really helped out in particular," Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said. "There were a lot of doubts about what we could do and they showed a lot of character."

In one of several lowlights for the crew of replacement officials, New Orleans was briefly ruled the winner on the field in overtime when running back Shaun Draughn lost the ball stretching for a first down and safety Roman Harper picked it up and ran to the end zone.

The fumble was overturned on video review, and although the spot came up a half-yard short of a first down, Charles easily converted a fourth-down run.

"We knew coming in that we could run against this defense," Charles said. "It was an opportunity we had to take advantage of."

New Orleans appeared to be taking command in the third quarter thanks to a pair of turnovers by the Chiefs.

First came a fumble by Dexter McCluster, who hurt his shoulder while falling on his own after a short catch, then let the ball go moments before he would have been touched down by cornerback Jabari Greer. Officials initially ruled McCluster down while linebacker Jonathan Casillas scooped the ball and ran to the end zone. The Saints challenged and won a reversal, giving them the ball on the Chiefs' 19 and setting up Graham's 1-yard score.

Greer's interception and 28-yard return to the Kansas City 7 then set up Collins' 6-yard TD to make it 24-6, setting the stage for the Chiefs' comeback ? and the Saints' collapse.

NOTES: Along with McCluster, the Chiefs lost starting C Rodney Hudson to an apparent right knee injury and RB Peyton Hillis to an ankle injury in the third quarter. ... Saints LB David Hawthorne left with a hamstring injury in the first half and did not return. ... Brees now has TD passes in 46 straight regular season games, one behind Johnny Unitas' record.
